A collection of applications and services that provide end-to-end solutions for creating and sharing business intelligence using Excel and Sharepoint.

Workbook is integrated with Excel and Sharepoint. In an Excel environment, workbook for Excel provides a familiar workstation creation and analysis experience. In the SharePoint field, a server-side application and functions are added to the workbook for Sharepoint, allowing you to access and manage the workbook you publish to SharePoint. The workbook server component loads data, processes queries, and refreshes execution plans, and tracks the server and workbook usage in the field.

What is workbook for Excel?

Workbook for Excel is a tool used to create workbook data in an Excel Workbook. You can use Excel Data Visualization objects, such as pivot tables and charts, to display the workbook data that you embed or reference in the Excel Workbook (.xlsx.

Workbook for Excel supports self-service Business Intelligence in the following ways.

  • Remove the row and column restrictions in the current Excel file so that you can import more data.

  • Through the Data Relationship layer, You can integrate data from different data sources and fully process all data. You can enter data, copy data from other worksheets, or import data from an enterprise database. You can establish relationships between data to analyze data, as if all data comes from a data source.

  • Create portable and reusable data. Data is retained in the workbook. You do not need to manage external data connections. If you publish, move, copy, or share a workbook, all the data will be associated with the workbook.

  • The rest of the workbook can use all the workbook data immediately. You can switch between the Excel and workbook windows to interactively process the data and its representation in the PivotTable or perspective. Data processing or its representation is not a separate task. You can process data and its representation in the same Excel environment.

Workbook for Excel allows you to import, filter, and sort millions of rows of data, far exceeding the limit of 1 million rows in Excel. Sorting and filtering operations are fast because they are executed by the local Analysis Services vertipaq processor running inside excel.

More importantly, you can establish a relationship between data from a completely different data source by using workbook for excel. Specifically, You can map columns that contain similar or identical data. When establishing a relationship between data, you create a new content in Excel that can be used in a PivotTable, pivot, or any Excel Data Representation object.

The saved data is stored in an Excel Workbook. The data is highly compressed, and the size of the generated file is suitable for management on the client workstation.

Finally, the user will obtain a workbook (.xlsx) file containing embedded data, which is extracted and processed by an internal processor but completely presented in Excel. Compression and processing are completed by the analysis services vertipaq engine. Query Processing runs transparently in the background to provide support for massive data in Excel. Because it is executed by the local analysis vertipaq engine, sorting and filtering operations are very fast.

What is workbook for Sharepoint?

The workbook in Excel is an analysis services data source. It uses an Analysis Service server instance in SharePoint integration mode to load data and respond to interactive queries from an Excel Workbook. On the client workstation, the analysis services server runs within the process in Excel. On the SharePoint farm, analysis services runs on the application server, which is used in pairs with the workbook System Service to process the on-server-side workbook data requests. You can share a workbook in the workbook by using Excel services and SQL Server workbook for Sharepoint.

Add a service and infrastructure for loading and detaching data in the workbook for Sharepoint. Compared with other large enterprise Bi data sources, the workbook data is managed by services and infrastructure, while the enterprise Bi data sources are limited in quantity and managed by database experts. At any given time, dozens or even hundreds of workbook files may be opened in the memory of the application server on the site. The workbook System Service tracks this activity, sets a new connection to the data loaded into the memory, and caches or detaches data when the data is no longer used or when system resource contention occurs. Collect server running status data and other usage data and display them in the report, which gives you an insight into the system running status.

Query the workbook data in SharePoint

When viewing the workbook in the SharePoint database, the analysis services server instance in the field is used to detect, extract, and process the workbook data, and Excel services displays the presentation layer. In a browser window with a workbook external program or an Excel 2010 desktop application, you can view the fully processed workbook.

Describes the process of processing a query request. Because workbook data is part of an Excel 2010 workbook, when you open an Excel Workbook in a SharePoint library and interact with a PivotTable or perspective that contains the workbook data, the Query Processing request is generated.

The Excel services and workbook for Sharepoint components process different parts of the same workbook (.xlsx) file. Excel services detects the dataset data and sends a Processing request to the dataset server. The workbook server assigns the request to the Analysis Services Service instance, which extracts data from the workbook in the content library and loads the data. The data stored in the memory is merged into the rendered workbook and passed back to the Excel Web access for display in the browser window.

Not all data in the workbook is processed by the workbook. Excel services processes table and cell data in a worksheet. Only the PivotTable, perspective, and slice corresponding to the workbook data are processed by the workbook service.

What are the target users of the workbook?
