Getting Started with NetBeans Visual WEB JSF application development

You do not have to read this tutorial in any particular order. You can quickly browse and then return to each chapter when time allows. If you prefer a step-by-step tutorial, you may want to first try JSF WEB application development.

This tutorial can be used to work with the following technologies and resources

* To play the advantage of NetBeans IDE 6.0 's Java EE 5 performance, use an application server that is fully compatible with the Java EE 5 specification, such as the Sun Java System Application Server 9/glassfish.

This tutorial is customized for the GlassFish V2 application server. If you are using a different server, refer to the release notes and FAQs for known issues and workarounds.

Start a project

Projects are equivalent to the working environment of your Web application. When you create a new Visual Web JSF Application project in the NetBeans IDE and you have specified a GlassFish V2 or newer version, the IDE creates a Java EE 5 that uses the JavaServer Faces 1.2 component Web application. By default, this Web application is created in a directory structure that conforms to the Java Blueprints project specification for Web applications.

Try

Use the appropriate steps in the following list to start the IDE:

Windows,solaris and Linux. Double-click the NetBeans desktop icon.

Mac. On the MacOS, 6.0 executables are installed in the/applications/netbeans/directory. Double-click the NetBeans icon in the folder.

Create a new Visual Web JSF Application project:

Choose File > New Project from the main menu.

In the New Project Wizard, select the Web category and the Web application project type and click Next.

Name the project gettingstarted. Note The default project location. If you like, you can click "Browse" and choose a different location.

Select a server and Java EE version.

For example, the default server is GlassFish V2,java EE 5 is the default Java EE version.

Click "Next".

Select the Visual Web JavaServer Faces Framework and click Finish to create a new project in the default location or in the location selected in step c.

The IDE creates the project directory in the selected (or default) project folder and names the same as the project name.
