Getting Started with Word Animation Tutorial 102: Creating a table of contents with outline levels

Source: Internet
Author: User

In addition to applying heading styles, specifying outline levels for headings can also be a quick way to create a table of contents. The steps are as follows:

1. Perform "view" → "toolbar" → "outline" to display the Outline toolbar.

2. Place the insertion point in the first heading that you want to appear in the table of contents.

3. On the Outlining toolbar, click to open the Outline level drop-down box to select an outline level for this title.

4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each heading that you want to include in the table of contents.

Tip: Switch to outline view to specify the outline level action, and you can see the process of change very intuitively.

5. Place the insertion point where you want to insert the table of contents.

6. Perform "insert" → "reference" → "index and table of contents" → "directory" tab.

7. Click the Options button, cancel the selection of styles, click OK, and return to the index and Table of Contents dialog box.

Note: The main purpose of canceling the "style" selection here is to get to know the process of creating a TOC simply by using outline levels. In practice, if heading styles are applied to headings in the body, the heading style (heading 1--heading 9) and outline level (level 1-9) correspond to one by one. For example, Heading 2 is applied to a heading, and its outline level automatically changes to level 2 even if you do not specify an outline level. If you set the TOC level for other styles, such as custom styles, the selection of the following outline level check box is automatically canceled and dimmed and is not selectable.

8. Set the number of "display levels". This example specifies a level four outline level, but only the first three levels are displayed in the table of contents.

9. Click OK to insert the table of contents at the specified location.
