If you want to annotate pictures, tables, formulas, and so on in your document, you can use the caption feature of Word, which has the greatest advantage of being able to automatically number the objects in the document, based on the location of the object, and a table of figures for the document.
First, insert captions manually
Steps:
1. Select a picture or table, formula, and so on that you want to make a caption.
2. Execute "Insert" → "Reference" → "caption", Open the Caption dialog box.
3. Select the caption label and display location in options, and click the New Label button to customize the label.
4. Click the Number button to open the Caption Number dialog box, select the numbering format for the caption, and click OK to close the Caption number dialog box.
Note: If you want to display chapter numbers, select the Include chapter number check box, but only if you must first apply a unique heading style to the chapter headings. The method is: perform "format" → "Bullets and Numbering" → "Multilevel symbols", specify or set a style for the title of the document. When you add the next chapter title, click the Drop-down button next to the Style box on the Formatting toolbar to select the chapter heading style that you are using in the list. If you do not specify a style for the caption, you will receive a prompt in the caption that does not have the specified style text in the document.
5. Click the OK button to insert the caption of the selected object at the specified location.
Second, automatic insertion of captions
Open the Caption dialog box, click the Auto Insert Caption button, select the object in the list that you want to automatically add captions to, set caption labels and display positions, and click OK. Later, Word automatically adds captions to the type of items that you insert in your document.
Tips:
1.Word Inserts a caption number as a field, and if the caption looks like the {SEQ table * ARABIC}, it shows the field code, not the field result.
2. Word automatically updates the caption number when you insert a new caption. However, if you delete or move a caption, you need to update the title manually. To update a caption, right-click the number, select Update field on the shortcut menu, or select the full text first, and then press F9 to update the caption for the full text.
3. If you want to add an additional description to an object in the caption, click After the caption, and then type the text you want.
