If you use a custom style for the title you want to create (the creation and use of styles will be covered later in the tutorial), you can also create a table of contents as follows:
1. Place the insertion point where you want to insert the table of contents.
2. Perform "insert" → "reference" → "index and table of contents" → "directory" tab.
3. Click the Options button to open the Directory Options dialog box.
4. Under Effective styles, delete the catalog-level numbers for the built-in styles, such as Heading 1, find the custom heading styles that apply to the document, and type the number 1 to 9 under TOC level to the right of the style name to indicate the level that each heading style represents.
5. Click "OK" button.
6. Make other directory-related options available on the Contents tab, as needed.
