IPv4 address is about to run out

Remember, 10 years ago, I told you about the IPV4 address that was about to run out? Although, this process took some time, but today, this time is still coming: with Asia, Europe, Latin America in the recent more than a year has slowly leftover IPv4 address to the distribution, now responsible for the United States, Canada, the North Atlantic region, and Arin of the Caribbean islands region also claimed that new IP applications would need to be queued. So now it's just the African side that can also apply for IPV4 address on demand.

ARIN is the U.S. Internet number registry, which is responsible for IP allocations in North America, South America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa, and has started to launch the IPV4 unmet demand strategy. Prior to that, organizations in the area covered by the Arin were also able to request new IPV4 addresses on demand, but, starting yesterday (July 02, 2015), ARIN was no longer able to meet these legitimate application requirements. This is left to those ISPs who come to Arin to apply for a new IPV4 address. 3 Options:

    • You can select a smaller number of address blocks (ARIN currently has a limited supply of 512 and 256 address blocks)
    • can choose to join the waiting list, waiting for the address block to meet the needs of the future becomes available and then allocated
    • You can choose to buy from a number of organizations with excess IP addresses

"If you choose a smaller address block, you won't be able to apply again within the next 90 days," Arin's chief executive, ARIN, told ARS. "We currently have nearly 500 small address blocks, but there will be 300 to 400 requests coming in each month, [so] the remaining address will not last for 2-4 weeks at all." ”

Isn't it possible for ISPs to play some strategic tricks here? For example, can ISPs continue to apply for a smaller number of address blocks after joining the waiting list? "The waiting list's IP address is a small number of addresses that arin back," Curran said. "Getting more addresses from the waiting list isn't really a good strategy, and trying to figure out how to use the IPV6 is a strategic direction that everyone should consider." “

"ISPs should adapt to this market change as quickly as possible. If you still need IPv4 's address, it's up to you, "Curran said. "But I can't guarantee how long the market will last." Imagine, 7 billion of people in the use of smart phones and home network access, work network, plus Google, youtube, facebook, bing and consumes a large number of addresses ... So even in a job perfect market above, can only allocate 4 billion around the address of the IPV4 also quickly play not to turn. “

At the same time we also with IPV4 address agent Avennue4 Vice-president Janine Goodman on some recent trend of the exchange of views.

"The IPV6 era will come sooner or later, this is the direction of the future," she said. "But it's going to take some time." Many organizations are not ready to shift to IPv6 tomorrow, and this process must take years. The transfer of the market will be carried out in the responsible situation IPV4 to IPv6 migration, rather than create a panic for people. “

IPV6 debut

The IETF organization actually saw the IPV4 address will be exhausted as early as the early 90, so they began to consider a new network protocol to solve the problem. The old IP address is version 4, and they think this new IP address is version 6. IPV6 increases the length of the IP address to not less than 128 bits – which is like adding 10-bit phone numbers to 40-bit. As a result, for practical purposes, a total of valid assignable IPV6 addresses can be said to be unlimited.

But here's the problem, the old one. The operating system can handle only the 32-bit address of the IPV4. And this problem in fact in the last few years also basically solved, today basically all operating systems can handle 128-bit IPV6 address-as soon as possible or some applications do not correctly IPV6 processing.

The main problem here is that many organizations and local networks simply do not have the support to start IPV6, although the launch of IPV6 support is not as difficult as everyone imagined, and in some large networks it is not necessarily a very complicated thing.

To achieve this shift, network service providers, routing, firewalls, load balancing, and DNS servers should all be added to the IPV6 support and reconfigured. Then some software that supports the business of the enterprise also needs to continue to be configured accordingly. In any case, it is essential to apply a new plan to the IPV6 application, and it is important to note that the IPV6 and IPv4 DHCP work differently.

The Google Analytics report claims that in 2009-2001 years, the number of users who used IPV6 connections accounted for only 1% of the total number of users, up from 2012 to 3.5%, a year ago, to fraction. Today it is 6.5% (weekdays) and 7.5% (weekends).

If you go to see Google for each country's IPV6 use state analysis, will find some very interesting things. In the early 2013, the United States and Belgium were IPv6 's most important two players, with IPv6 reaching 2.17% and 0.04% respectively. Today, Belgium is the world's most popular IPv6 country, reaching 35%, while the United States is ranked third in Switzerland (both close to 21%). According to the data provided by the company, 7 countries in the world today have a IPv6 penetration rate of more than 10%: Belgium, Paris, USA, Peru, Germany, Luxembourg, and Portugal. Greece will soon be the eighth one. In 16 countries, the IPV6 penetration rate is more than 5%, while over 1% per cent has 32 countries.

Surprisingly, there is a number-level gap in the penetration of neighbouring countries. For example, the United States is 21%, while neighbor Canada has only 0.5% IPv6 users. Belgium is 35%, and the Netherlands next door is only 3%. Ireland is 2.4%, but it should be only 0.2%.

The white area represented by the IPv6 area, followed by the green area, the darker the green, the more popular the IPv6, while the red represents a bad situation, these areas are not only basically not popular IPv6, and their IPv6 access speed is slower than IPv4 Orange represents a major development in the IPv6 region, where the IPV6 connection is slower than IPv4. Of course, there are places where IPv6 are faster than IPV4, such as Belgium and Russia.

Therefore, it seems that the situation of IPV4 unified will not be maintained for too long, through the dynamic IP allocation method to solve the IP address is not enough to use the solution is not the final solution. We know very well that it is possible to use IPV6 for 10% of the Internet users in a country. Once some people take the lead and begin to adopt, then, according to the law of Arc, there will be more and more people to use in the future.
