To sum up, the things I have done so far this year include:
1. It took 10 months to travel around the world through 17 countries and regions in Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia, Central and South America. The theme of this trip is surfing and photography.
2. Attendance at meetings in Hong Kong, Japan, USA and London
3. A book was written to O ' Reilly Publishing company on departure, titled " JavaScript Web Applications "
4. Also wrote a book on Coffeescript The book will soon be published by O ' Reilly Company.
5. Write a large number of open source libraries, such as Spine , Spine.mobile , GFX , and Juggernaut .
6. The framework of a start-up company is planned
7. Attendance at London FOWA Conference
8. Finally, I Twitter The company got a job.
So, let me start a year ago, it was September 2010, I just came out of a company I co-founded, although this experience is very valuable, but the endless long hours of hard work let me exhausted. I'm back in England and need to think about the future. I've always had a dream of moving to the United States (a few years), so I wrote the following on Google Notepad:
The choice of life:
To study at Columbia University in New York.
The downside-very expensive, and not necessarily able to learn anything really useful, boring?
Benefits-it's a New York University!
Write a book and apply for a 01 visa
The downside-takes a lot of time and is risky
Benefits-Good for business, fun
Wait. Go to New York for a holiday (3 months). Waiting for a start-up visa.
It's easy-it's not that funny.
Maybe choose the second one, not 3?
Finally I chose 2, I have been studying JavaScript Web application for a long time, I want to write a book on this, why not do travel around the world, while writing books? It's also a dream for me. I bought a round-the-world ticket from Oneworld (cheaper than you think) and decided to go to my first stop next week, South Africa.
If you have never been to Africa, you should go once. The scenery there is primitive and beautiful, and for those who have not experienced this view, it is difficult for you to describe it in words. I liked the south a few years ago, when I had a 3-month surfing trip on the east coast. This time, I had only one months to cross the Transkei, from Cape Town to Durban. As I was traveling in South Africa, my writing began, filling in the materials with chapters in the framework of the book submitted early to O ' Reilly.
Transkei is a very rustic place in South Africa, full of hills, small villages and thatched huts. They still follow the emirate, a leader, and most of the natives live by fishing. We had two days on the rough dirt road to reach my favorite place, a beautiful bay called the Coffee Bay (Coffee Bay). There, I took a break and downloaded some information from the Internet to prepare for the farther Gulf expedition.
I also remember clearly that we walked a few miles to the uncultivated beach, and we traveled through villages isolated by sand and hills. There is a place where we want to cross a big river, we need to swim over, I put my backpack over my head, so that the camera and ipod inside the water. Africa is a place where you get out of the world, liberate your thoughts, and re-recognize the most important things in life.
The next stop is Hong Kong, where I spent my 21 birthday, and then I travelled overland from Singapore to Hanoi, Vietnam. Many people do not believe that 70% of Hong Kong's area is covered by the nature park, I walk a few wonderful scenic routes, very spectacular, such as: Hong Kong Dragon Ridge. For a few days, I was hanging out on the boot.hk site, a collaborative site where I taught a fellow traveler how to use Ruby. Then, at night, I was partying with some of the surfers in Soho until the wee hours of the morning.
From Thailand to Cambodia to Vietnam is my favorite part of this trip, if you have never been to Asia, you should definitely go there once. These countries are very beautiful, the weather is very good, the food is delicious, people are very friendly. Angkor Wat is one of the most magical places in the world and everyone should go and see. It was Trey Ratcliff's photo that drew me there, and many of my other destinations were influenced by him. That guy is the first advocate for many tourist destinations.
In some obscure little blogs, I heard someone say a very far-off beautiful little island in the Cambodian seaside. Said the island's Sihanoukville this place has a bar, said can only take the small fishing boat to arrive there. I, as well as some very good friends, took the evening bus and began to look for the legendary bar. The search was almost all day long, and every bar we asked was pointing us to another bar. In the end, we asked and made a shuttle bus to the place the next morning.
The picture above is a 10-dollar-a-night chalet on the coast. After leaving the local neighborhoods, our team was like the only person on the island, and we ran with freedom. During the day we lay lazy on the beach, eating the delicious fruit salad prepared by the island's chefs, and at night we swam in the plankton-filled sea.
Next stop is Vietnam, we are along the Mekong River tributary to a small town on the border, we are the only Westerners here, the exchange has become the biggest problem. Fortunately, we found one who might be the only English-speaking person in the town who rode his bike as our guide. When my credit card was swallowed up by one of the ATMs there, he offered me a lot of help!
Our team was divided into several ways, and when I arrived in Vietnam, my book was finished as planned and went very well. At this time, I stayed in Saigon for a few more weeks, let me in a few chapters of the book has made great progress, just the Chinese Lunar New Year, the atmosphere is very lively.
Followed by Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii. It's hard for me to write all my feelings in this article, but it's an unforgettable journey in this life. It's amazing to put so much beauty in one country, and I'm talking about New Zealand. My favorite memory is a lake along the Wanaka in the sun running, there is carrying food and daily necessities, on foot for several days across the mountains of Routeburn. During my trip to this country, I met several friends who were worthy of my life. It's a real paradise.
As I circled the southern islands of New Zealand, my book was finally completed and submitted to the technical editor for proofreading.
Next comes New York and San Francisco, and these two magical places are full of talented programmers, some of whom I have been fortunate to know. Techcrunch disrupt is wonderful (I highly recommend hackathon).
During my stopover from New York to San Francisco, I had a lot of job interviews at various companies and eventually found a job in front-end development at Twitter. To work with an outstanding team there, I could not but tremble with joy, and go to San Francisco, which is also a dream of my life.
When the visa was done, I went on a trip to Central and South America, and I developed a small project: a JavaScript MVC framework library called Spine. I'm in Costa Rica, Panama, Peru, Bolvia, and Argentina. Peru is my favorite, although the elevation there has brought me a lot of trouble, I spent most of my time exploring. The picture below is the legendary Falcon of Costa Rica, captured when I climbed down the deepest canyon in the world.
