Google shares the specifications and standards of optical fiber networks

A few days ago, Google is introducing some specification standards for fiber optic networks to help promote the adoption of Software Defined Network Technology (SDN.

BikashKoley, Google's network architect, said at a telecom activity in Chicago that the network department has made new progress in adopting SDN over the past year, however, in the optical fiber layer, it is still not too far away. To help solve this problem, Google shares some optical topology configuration models of devices from multiple vendors through OpenConfig, a group dominated by telecom companies, we plan to do the same thing for its "open-Line System Configuration Model" in the next month.

Openconfig started as an informal collaboration between Google and Microsoft, followed by the addition of telecom companies AT&T and BT. Through this cooperation, we have developed a network data model for the next-generation Packet Networks, starting from the BGP specification that plays an important role in cross-IP network routing traffic (Border Gateway Protocol.

OpenConfig members are developing a model for configuration and running status descriptions to facilitate the use of SDN in the entire optical network topology. "We are transforming our transmission network based on SDN principles," Koley said. "To achieve this, we need a vendor-neutral topology and configuration model, and centralized configuration that can be understood by the existing supplier Element Management System to facilitate local support, and converts it to a network element. Most importantly, we need to gain visibility into the network status ."

According to Lightreading, Koley added: "It is important to develop and deploy configuration and network status models successively, because changing the configuration means a global change to the network. People need to be able to see these changes in real time. If you cannot see this change, the network may be faulty. This is why independent configuration development and network status models are no longer meaningful ."

Koley said OpenConfig is also looking for a wider range of people from the industry, and does not want to represent the voice of some big companies. This is not a standard organization and is open to network operators of any scale.

The team is working on GitHub, an open source library, but only invited people can participate. However, in the future, we plan to devote all our energy to standard processes.
