Add line number

You can add line numbers to all or part of a document. To view line numbers, you must be in Print layout view (in the Document view group on the View tab).

Comments

A table is counted as one row.

A picture will be counted as one line.

If the text box is embedded in the text on the page, a text box is counted as one line. If the text on the page wraps around the text box, the text lines on the page are counted. The lines of text in the text box are not counted.

Add line numbers to the entire document

1, on the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click Line Number.

Note If your document is divided into sections and you want to add line numbers to the entire document, you need to select the document first. On the Start tab, in the Edit group, click Select, and then click Choose All. or press CTRL + A.

2. Perform one of the following actions:

To continuously number all content in the document, click Sequential Numbering.

To start numbering from 1 on each page, click Renumber per page.

To start numbering from 1 in each section end-of-file, click Renumber per section.

Add line numbers to one or more sections

You can delete line numbers from an entire document, from any section, or from a paragraph.

3. Perform one of the following actions:

To remove the line number from the entire document or a section, click None.

To remove a line number from a single paragraph, click Prohibit for current paragraph.
