The basic feature of the Database connection tool software DB2 Connect is to provide a way to connect interactive access between the database servers of the desktop application and the service host. The environment in which these desktop applications reside can be either windows, linux, or any of the UNIX. The personal version of the DB2 Connect tool is the easiest way to implement a desktop application to access a database server.
Any desktop computer with a personal version of DB2 Connect tool software can rely on the DB2 Connect tool and the database running on a mainframe server-DB2 UDB for os/390, DB2 udb for z/OS, and a direct TCP/IP network connection between a database running on a minicomputer server DB2 UDB for iSeries, and a database running on a PC server DB2 for linux, unix, windows. Applications can also use the same transactional protocol language to connect and update data content in multiple DB2 series databases.
The following figure shows the DB2 Connect tool from the desktop computer to access the DB2 database in various environments
