Method 1. Change how a file is opened by default
The first step: Right-click the file.
Step two: If you press option, you will see the "Open with" option become "always open this way."
Step three: Select an application in the always open in this way list.
Then the file should open in the application you just selected (in this case, Pixelmator), and the file will later be opened by default in this application.
Note: it applies only to one of the files you choose, and does not apply to other files, including files of the same type.
Method 2. Change the default open mode for files of the same type
Step One: Right-click the file, and then select the Show Introduction option.
Step two: Find the "Open with" item, click the inverted triangle to select the default application you want to specify.
Step three: Click the "Change All" button to take effect.
Note: To revert to the default application specified by the original OS X, simply follow the steps above and select the original application.
If you find yourself always using a particular application (rather than the default) to open a file type like the author, changing its default open mode may save you a certain amount of time.
