In VR technology, product presentation and scenario roaming are required. If you want to have a virtual 3D sky inside, you must use the sky ball; currently, there are two basic practices for Sky balls: Square and spherical.
Currently, the 360-degree panorama mainly uses a spherical shape. For existing real scenes, if you need this environment, you can use the fish eye camera, you can create a spherical sky ball by taking pictures in the first and second directions. So how can we use Max to create a sky ball? Next we will explain the differences between various sky balls and how to create various sky balls in MAX:
As you can see, the so-called square sky ball is equivalent to a fixed point where we are located, the black name environment around the surrounding areas is considered as a box, it consists of six components: top, bottom, left, and back. These six aspects constitute our current environment.
So how to create it in Max?
You can use Max to generate six pictures. These six pictures can be used as our sky box.
Max provides a convenient function to render the current scene to six images by specifying a viewpoint position (these six images can form a cube, also known as cubic map ). The procedure is as follows (the following maxversions is 6.0. If it is another version, it may be slightly different ):
1. Open a max scenario File
2. Add a sphere to the scene to represent the position of the viewpoint.
3. Press m to open the material editor.
4. Select an unused material ball and set it to standard.

5. click the button on the right of the diffuse color and select "reflect/refract" as the Texture type"
In the reflect/refract settings window, follow the steps 1, 2, 3, and 4 to set
After rendering, you can locate the six image files generated by Max at the position specified in step 1. The file names end with up, lf, BK, RT, FR, and DN, respectively. As shown in:
Such a sky box is created, and can be used in the current Virtual Reality software VRP, C3d, etc. as long as it is set up based on six pictures of the sky virtual software.
Note: If you need to use such a sky ball to your own software, you must consider the normal phenomenon, because the virtual scenario in Max calculates the normal of the left-hand system, what we use in reality is the right hand system, so if we need to use the sky ball in our own program software, we must consider the algorithm of normal calculation, otherwise, you have to flip the six images.
