By default, the files that are referenced by the layers that are added in the map file Mxd in ArcGIS 10 are absolute paths. This means that if you refer to the "D:\data\DEM.shp" file in the map, the path to the file saved in the Map.mxd file is also "D:\data\DEM.shp". If you want to transfer the project file to a different location, even if you copy the entire project folder, a reference error will also occur when you open the Map.mxd file again.
By setting the Mxd file as a reference relative path in ArcMap, you can avoid problems that may be faced with future project transfers. For an mxd file that already has a reference to an absolute path, the effort to re-add the layer can also be reduced by setting it accordingly.
