Getting started with Search

The first time you enter Google, it will determine the language interface based on your operating system. Note that Google uses cookies to store page settings. Therefore, if your system disables cookies, you cannot customize the Google interface.

Google's homepage is refreshing. The four functional modules are arranged below the LOGO: websites, images, newsgroups, and directory services. The default search type is website search. Now we will start the first search practice. If you are a newbie to search, I want to know the ins and outs of the search engine and the Search Skills. Enter a keyword "Search Engine" in the search box, select the "search Chinese (simplified) web page" option, and then click the "Google Search" button (or press Enter) below ), the result is displayed.

Note: The quotation marks outside the search syntax in the article only serve as references and cannot be included in the search bar.

Initial Search

In the above example, a single keyword "Search Engine" contains vast amounts of information, and most of the information does not meet your own requirements. What should I do? We need to further narrow down the search scope and results.

1. The search result must contain two or more keywords.

Generally, a search engine needs to add "" between multiple keywords, while Google does not need to use "" in plain text to represent the logical "and" operations, as long as there are spaces. Now, we need to know the history of the search engine. Therefore, we hope that the searched web page will have two keywords: "Search Engine" and "history.

Example: search for all Chinese webpages with keywords "Search Engine" and "history"

Search: "Search Engine history"

Result: A Chinese (simplified) web page with search engine history is searched. There are about 78,600 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.36 seconds.

Two keywords are used, and the query result has been reduced from more than 0.7 million to more than 70 thousand. However, looking at the search results, we found that most of the results in the forefront are still not in line with the requirements. The "History" of most web pages is not what we need ". What should we do? Delete the "History" that is irrelevant to the search engine ". We found that this part of useless information is always related to the word "culture". Other common words are "Chinese History", "World History", and "historical books.

2. The search results do not contain certain specific information.

Google uses the minus sign "-" to indicate the logical "Non" operation. "A cb" indicates searching for webpages that contain A but do not have B.

Example: search for all Chinese webpages that contain "Search Engine" and "History" but not "culture", "Chinese History", and "world history"

Search: "Search Engine history-culture-China history-world history"

Result: A Chinese (simplified) webpage related to search engine history-culture-Chinese history-world history has been searched. There are about 36,800 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.22 seconds.

We can see that by removing irrelevant information, the search results are reduced by nearly half. The first search result is:

Open-to-train search engine development history

Search engine Express,... professional introduction to the site of search engine ....

Www.se-express.com/about/about.htm-14 k-webpage snapshot-similar webpage

Very match the search requirements. In addition, the eighth search result is:

463 search king
Search the entire website and enter keywords here. Your current

Location: Home> Internet search manual> Search Engine history ....

Www.cnco.net/search/history.htm-21 k-webpage snapshot-similar webpage

It also meets the search requirements. However, there are only two of the 10 results that meet the requirements. However, before you have a better strategy, you may wish to open a result first. Clicking open se-express.com's web page called "Search Engine History", we found that the history of search engines is closely related to the early file retrieval tool "Archie" on the Internet. In addition, the search engine seems to have a core program called "Spider", and the earliest formed search engine is "Lycos", which makes the search engine deeply rooted in the hearts of "Yahoo ". With this information, we can further make the search results meet the requirements.

Note: "" and "-" Here are English characters, rather than Chinese characters "+" and "-". In addition, there must be no space between the operator and the keyword. For example, "Search Engine-culture" means that the search engine considers the keywords as "Search Engine" and "culture" logic "and" operations, and the "-" in the middle is ignored.

6.3. The search result contains at least one of multiple keywords.

Google uses uppercase "OR" to indicate logical "OR" operations. Search for "a or B" means that either A, B, or a and B are found on the webpage. In the above example, we hope that the search results should contain one or several keywords such as "archie", "lycos", and "Spider", so as to further streamline the search results.

For example, to search for the following webpage, you must contain "Search Engine" and "History" without "culture". You can include one or more of the following keywords: "Archie", "Spider", "Lycos", and "Yahoo ".

Search: "Search Engine history archie OR spider OR lycos OR yahoo-Culture"

Result: A Chinese (simplified) webpage with a search engine history of archie OR spider OR lycos OR yahoo-culture has been searched. There are about 8,400 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.16 seconds.

We can see that the search results are reduced to more than, and most of the first 20 results meet the search requirements. If you want to know about the history of search engines, you may wish to study the search results.

Note: The "and" operation must use uppercase "OR" instead of lowercase "or ".

In the above example, I introduced the most basic search engine Syntax "and" Non "and" or ". The three search syntaxes Google uses" "(Space), "-" and "OR. Following the example above, you can also learn how to narrow down the search scope and quickly find the general method of the target information: the keywords contained in the target information (connected ), keywords that cannot be contained in the target information (removed with "-"). keywords that may be contained in the target information (connected with "OR ).

7. Miscellaneous syntax

7.1. wildcard

Many search engines Support wildcard numbers. For example, "*" represents a series of characters, "?" Represents a single character. Google has limited support for wildcard characters. At present, it can only use "*" to replace a single character, and contain "*" must be caused. For example, "" governing the country "means to search for the first four-character phrase" take "and the last two words" govern the country ". The" * "in the middle can be any character.

7.2. uppercase/lowercase keywords

Google is not case sensitive to English characters. The search results for "GOD" and "god" are the same.

7.3. Search the entire phrase or sentence

Google keywords can be words (with no spaces in the middle) or phrases (with spaces in the middle ). However, if you use a phrase as a keyword, you must enclose it in quotation marks. Otherwise, spaces are treated as "and" operators.

Example: Search for the English information about the First World War.

Search: "world war I ""

Result: A total of 937,000 query results have been searched for "world war I" on the Internet. This is item 1-10. The search time is 0.06 seconds.

7.4. characters ignored by the search engine and mandatory search

Google frequently-used English words, such as "I", "com", and "www", and some symbols such as "*" and "..

Example: search for some historical information about the origin of www.

Search: "historical internet of www"

Result: The following words are not included in the search range because they are used too frequently: The Chinese (simplified) web pages related to the historical internet of www have been searched. There are about 75,100 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.22 seconds.

We can see that the search for "www historical internet" is omitted by the search engine. Therefore, the above search only searches for "History" and "internet ". This obviously does not meet the requirements. Here, by the way, I have some knowledge about word segmentation in search engines. When we search for "www History", the search engine actually divides this phrase into three parts: "www", "of", and "history, this is the word segmentation of the search engine. Therefore, even if you enter a continuous "www History", the search engine uses this phrase as a separate search for three keywords.

If you want to forcibly search for ignored keywords, you need to add the plaintext "+" before the keyword.

Search: "+ www + historical internet"

Result: A Chinese (simplified) webpage with a historical internet connection with + www + has been searched. There are about 25,000 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.05 seconds.

Another way to force the search is to use double quotation marks. In the above example, "world war I", "I" is actually a ignore word, but because it is caused by double quotation marks, the search engine forces the search for this specific phrase.

Search: "www history" internet"
Result: A Chinese (simplified) webpage related to "www history" internet has been searched. There are about 7 query results, which are 1-6. The search time is 0.26 seconds.

We can see that this search actually uses "www history" as a complete keyword. Obviously, there are not many webpages that contain such a specific phrase. However, each item meets the requirements.

Note: most commonly used English symbols (such as question marks, periods, and commas) cannot be keywords, nor can they be enhanced.

8. Advanced Search

Some Basic Search syntaxes of Google have been discussed above. Generally, these simple search syntax can solve most problems. However, if you want to quickly find the desired information, you need to know more.

8.1. Restrict the websites to be searched

"Site" indicates that the search results are limited to a specific website or website channel, such as www.sina.com.cn, edu.sina.com.cn, or a domain name such as "com.cn" or "com. If you want to exclude a website or a page with a domain name, you only need to use "-website/domain name ".

Example: The famous IT portals ZDNET and CNET searched for information about search engine techniques.

Search: "search engine" tips site: www.zdnet.com OR site: www.cnet.com"

Result: The webpage "search engine" tips OR site: www.cnet.com has been searched in www.zdnet.com. There are about 1,040 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.09 seconds.

Note: Google has a small BUG here. "Www.zdnet.com has been searched ...", In fact, it should be expressed as "search in www.zdnet.comwww.cnet.com ...".

Example: search for information about search engine skills in Sina technology.

Search: "Search Engine tips site: tech.sina.com.cn"

Result: A Chinese (simplified) web page related to search engine skills has been searched in tech.sina.com.cn. There are about 163 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.07 seconds.

Note: The colon after site is an English character and cannot contain spaces after the colon. Otherwise, "site:" is used as a search keyword. In addition, the website domain name cannot have the "http: //" prefix or any "/" directory suffix. The website channel is limited to the "channel name. domain Name, rather than domain name/channel name.

8.2. Search for information in a certain type of file

"Filetype:" is a powerful and practical search syntax developed by Google. That is to say, Google can not only search common text pages, but also search some binary documents. Animated files (Flash Animation. The most practical document search is PDF search. PDF is an electronic document format developed by ADOBE and has become an electronic publishing standard for the Internet. Currently, Google searches for about 25 million PDF documents, accounting for about 80% of the total number of binary documents indexed. PDF documents are usually comprehensive documents with illustrated texts. The information provided is generally concentrated and comprehensive.

Example: Search for Office documents of several balance sheets.

Search: "Balance Sheet filetype: doc OR filetype: xls OR filetype: ppt"

Result: You have searched the Chinese (simplified) webpage on the balance sheet filetype: doc OR filetype: xls OR filetype: ppt. There are about 481 query results, which are 1-10. The search time is 0.04 seconds.

Note: The downloaded Office file may contain a macro virus, so proceed with caution.

Example: Search for PDF documents on Search Engine knowledge and skills

Search: "search engine" tips OR tutorial filetype: pdf"

Result: You have searched for "search engine" tips OR tutorial filetype: pdf. There are about 12,600 query results, which are items 1-10. The search time is 0.22 seconds.

Let's take a look at one of the results:

[PDF] Search Engines Tips

Document Type: PDF/Adobe Acrobat-HTML

... Http://www.google.com/press/zeitgeist.html See what people are searching on at Google.com

* Search Engine Watch http://searchenginewatch.com/Some free tips...

Www.allvertical.com/promokits/searchenginetips?- similar webpage

As you can see, Google uses [PDF] to mark this as a PDF document search. In addition, it also provides the HTML version of this PDF document, the HTML Version retains the text content and structure of the document, but there is no image.

8.3. The search keyword is included in the URL link.

The webpage link returned by the "inurl" syntax contains the first keyword, and the following keyword appears in the link or webpage document. Many websites display a type of resource names with the same attributes in the directory name or webpage name, such as "MP3" and "GALLARY". Therefore, you can use the INURL syntax to find the relevant resource links, and then use the second keyword to determine whether a specific item is available. The biggest difference between INURL syntax and Basic Search syntax is that the former can usually provide very accurate topic information.
