Compress a DVD by yourself
Nowadays, in the audio and video markets across regions, a type of disc named compressed DVD is becoming popular. A 30-episode TV series can be played on a conventional DVD player with only three DVDs. So many people think that there is a new DVD format. Some media did not conduct any in-depth research and made some false reports. What is the form of a DVD?
Note: there is also a type of computer-attached DVD with a higher compression ratio, even a series of 80 sets, a DVD can also be done, but it is not a compressed DVD, we only use another video conversion format with a high compression rate, such as RM and DIVX, which is not discussed today.
Uncover the truth about a compressed DVD
In order to find out the truth of the compressed DVD, the author collected several sets of DVD compressed discs from the market. After analysis, it is found that it is basically a DVD consisting of a standard-resolution MPEG-1 video! It is converted from a standard DVD and looks better than a normal VCD. In most people's minds, the video part of the DVD can only be a MPEG-2, which is actually a misunderstanding, according to the specifications of the DVD, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 are legal video encoding! However, the vast majority of home DVD production software and can not make MPEG-1 video into a DVD, this has been a professional DVD production software function, according to observation, among the home DVD production software, only TMPGEnc DVD Author has this function.
The bit rate of the MPEG-1 video used for this compression DVD is the same as 1150 Kbps as the standard VCD; The Audio Encoding adopts a 48 kHz sampling rate of MPEG-1/2 Layer Ⅱ audio, slightly higher than 44.1 kHz of the VCD; you can use standard or in-box subtitles of a DVD. A 450 gb dvd can be used to put down programs for over minutes, that is, around 8 to 10 episodes of TV series.
Through the above analysis, we can draw a conclusion: first, this is not a new technology at all. Second, while compressing the volume and price, the compression also compresses the quality! Of course, the biggest advantage of this kind of dish is to save a lot of steps for changing the disk. In addition, most viewers do not have high image quality requirements for TV series. Audio and video publishers may also use this practice to make it cheaper for users who do not have high image quality requirements.
I also made large-capacity DVDs.
The material used to create a compressed DVD can be VCD, streaming media video, DVDRip, and the original version. Both of them need to be converted into standard MPEG-1 files for VCD. Their conversion flowchart is shown in Figure 1.

I. DVD to MPEG-1
InterVideo DVD Copy 2 is powerful and easy to operate. Many brand DVD recorders are provided with this software. Its MPEG encoding is outstanding, and subtitles in the original DVD can be encoded into the MPEG-1.
1. Source, target, and format settings
Run the InterVideo DVD Copy 2 interface (figure 2). First, insert the DVD to be converted and click the Browse Source button at "Source" in step 1 to specify the drive letter of the DVD drive; next, click the Browse targets button at the destination in step 2 and specify the destination to be copied as the hard disk, so that you can get the MPEG-1 file instead of generating the VCD disc directly; in step 2, select VCD as the replication type. Next, select the copied content and select "main movie" to remove unnecessary menus, titles, and credits.

2. Audio Track, subtitle, and recording disk settings
Because DVDs usually contain multiple audio tracks and Subtitle tracks, we also need to choose Audio sources, video sources, and Subtitle sources that are merged into the VCD. The audio and subtitle should be "Chinese (China)" as much as possible. In this case, the audio and subtitle will be used as the Chinese text screen and dubbing.
Finally, select the "properties" button and set "video system" to "PAL" on the "General" tab of the "Optional Settings" dialog box ", select "NONE" for "CD media division mode ".
After setting, click "start burning" to copy and convert the DVD. After getting the MPEG-1 file converted from the entire DVD, you also need to split it into a single MPEG-1 file by drama, such a tool is more, I will not go into details here (the cutting and splitting can also be done in the following steps ).
Ii. editing TV series
The key to making a compressed DVD is TMPGEnc DVD Author, which can be used to make a compressed DVD with a MPEG-1 file, otherwise you must use professional DVD production software.
1. Create a project
After running TMPGEnc DVD Author, the Start step is first displayed in the window, and click Create new Project) "button to go to the" Create source code "step to start editing the DVD.
2. Edit the DVD content
Next, we need to import the clip file, edit the file, and arrange the program track of the DVD.
In the "Source setup (Source code settings)" step, select the "Add file" button to Add the first episode of The encoded TV series to the program track list. Next, click "Add new track (Add new program track)" in the Left bar to create a new program track, and then Add the second set to program track 2 in the same way. In the future, the number of sets is also added in the same way, that is, a set creates a new program track. In general, a MPEG-1 file converted from a DVD is often a multi-set TV series, we can repeat the same file (there are several sets imported several times), and then edit it. Usually a gb dvd tray can put down about 10 sets of TV series. Of course, you can put as many as possible, as long as it does not exceed GB.
The default program track name is "Untitled track1 (Untitled program track)". To facilitate the differences, you need to rename them: select a program track from the program track list on the left, right-click, select the Rename command from the shortcut menu, and enter its name in the pop-up dialog box, such as "first set ".
3. Editing
We need to split the MPEG-1 file from the entire DVD. In addition, the start and end of each set are the theme song, the ending song and the cast staff table, which are both space and time-consuming and should be removed. Select a program track, and click the Edit button on the clip in the chapter list on the right. The Edit clip dialog box appears) dialog Box (Figure 3 ). In the dialog box, move the playback slider to the start position of the TV series to be selected. Click "Set as start frame" to Set it to the beginning of the clip, move the slider to the end position and click Set as end frame to Set the end of the credits. Click OK to return to the main page.

4. Create a menu
In fact, you can directly generate a DVD file or burn a DVD. However, to make it easier to play a TV series, you 'd better make a menu for selection.
Select the "Create menu" button in the upper part of the window to go to the menu creation step. You can select a menu template from the menu subject drop-down list in the upper left corner, the menu subject drop-down list has seven preset menu templates. You can select a template and then modify the menu title. If you are not satisfied with the template, you can select "New theme (New subject)" in the drop-down list to create your favorite menu.
5. Output complete
After the menu is edited, the DVD is output. Select the "Output" button to go to the Output step. First, select the "Create DVD folder" check box, and then set the Output folder, click Begin output to generate the DVD file.
When the output is complete, a dialog box is displayed, prompting that the DVD generation is complete. You can select "Open DVD Write Tools (start DVD? ")" Button to start the software-provided DVD burning tool. After inserting the DVD tray, click "Write DVD (Write to DVD)" to burn.
Research and Production of compressed DVDs
The compressed DVD is very popular, attracting me to study it carefully. After repeated tests and scrutiny, we found that the rules are as follows:
1. Video setting standard: 1150 Kbps, 25.0 fps, resolution: 352*288 (or), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD ).
2. audio setting standard: 224 Kbps, 48000Hz, 2 channels, Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2
Production sequence:
1. First Use TMPGEnc Plus 2.54 to convert according to the above standard.
2. Burn 3.5 with TMPGEnc DVD Author or youli recording.
The compression of a DVD is complete, and a single disc can compress four movies. Premise: the original disc must be of vcd Quality.
