as a novice, you need to know how to modify any default program in Ubuntu, which is what I want to talk about in this guide today.
For me, installing VLC Multimedia player is one of the first things to do when installing Ubuntu 16.04. In order to enable me to double-click a video to open with VLC, after I install VLC I will set it as the default program.
The methods mentioned here apply to all Ubuntu 12.04,ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04. In Ubuntu, there are two basic ways to modify the default program:
- Through System setup
- Through the right-click menu
1. Modify Ubuntu default program through system settings
Go to the Unity panel and search for system settings (Settings):
In system setup Settings , select the detailed options (Details ):
In the left panel, select default applications, you will find that the default program can be modified in the right panel.
As you can see, there are only a few classes of default programs that could be changed. Here you can change the default programs for browsers, email clients, calendars, music, videos, and albums. How are the other types of default programs modified?
Do not worry, in order to modify other types of default programs, we will use the right-click menu.
2. Modify the default program via the right-click menu
If you have used a Windows system, you should have seen "open with" in the right-click menu, which you can use to modify the default program. We also have a similar approach in Ubuntu.
Right-click a file that does not have the default open program set, select properties
Select Properties from the right-click menu
Here, you can choose which program to use to open and set as the default program .
Setting the default program for opening WebP pictures in Ubuntu is Gthumb
It's a piece of cake, isn't it? Once you have done this, all files of the same type will be opened with the default program of your choice.
