How to take a moving object in a light environment

1. Use the manual mode (we recommend the video "Wu Shitong photography basics 07-exposure compensation and manual mode")

Before you start shooting, make sure that the settings of the fuselage are correct. Let's start with the shooting mode. No matter which shooting mode you usually use, in the field of low light motion photography, you need to use a shooting mode that gives you more room for adjustment. Manual mode (M files) gives you more control over the body, so using this mode for shooting is a good choice. If you still have A lot of discomfort with the use of the M file, or the light on the shooting scene is unpredictable, you can also use the aperture priority mode (file.

By using the M file, you can determine the exposure value by yourself. Some values may not be used in automatic mode, and we will definitely need them at a certain time.

2. Use a quick shot

Next, we will face the issue of selecting a lens. Here, we should remember to use the so-called fast lens, that is, the telephoto large aperture lens. In a low light environment, you need to open the aperture for shooting to bring more light into the lens. On the other hand, our shooting targets are usually far away from us. At this time, we need to use a telephoto. I personally prefer 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.

You may be inclined to get extra focal lengths by using the addition mirror. If you are not familiar with the addition mirror, you may ignore it while increasing the focal lengths of your lens by 1.4 to twice, it will also reduce the first or even the amount of incoming light, which is very precious in a low light environment. Assume that you were shooting at the f/4 aperture. After using the contrast mirror, your aperture will become f/8, in this case, you are not as cost-effective as adding an image to enlarge the subject.

3. Shooting with a larger aperture

Now it is time to prepare for shooting. The first step to determine the exposure is to find a proper aperture. It doesn't need to be too much effort to select the aperture size in low light conditions. Even with the maximum aperture, let's embrace more light. However, the disadvantage of this is that our depth of field will be very small. Fortunately, when shooting such a subject, we don't need to care about it. What's more, who cares about images with sharp focus and blurred background?

4. Increase shutter speed as much as possible

Then we need to set the shutter speed. The trick here is to do your best to use a faster shutter speed. Even if your shooting subject does not move much, we still need to consider the safe shutter range based on the focal length of the camera and follow the interaction rules between the two, the shutter security is inversely proportional to the lens focal length. Therefore, if we use a 100mm lens for shooting, the shutter speed of the fuselage must be set at least 1/100 seconds.

When your subject begins to move, the situation may be a little different. At this time, we can no longer just ensure the safety of the shutter, but to use a higher shutter speed, to avoid unnecessary blurring of the subject. Never be clever at this point, even if we do not find any blur when we use the body LCD for playback, but when you return home and turn on the picture in full size on the computer, the definition of the image may still disappoint you.

5. Use high ISO

Before completing the exposure settings, we also need to determine the ISO. Because we have determined the aperture and shutter, ISO can help us to obtain the appropriate exposure value without changing the two. Do not always feel at war when using high ISO. I often set a value like 1600 or 3200, and sometimes I even enable ISO 6400, you need to know that these ISO is never used in general.

6. Test exposure before formal shooting

Before the official launch, do not forget to test your exposure. This check is necessary to prevent our hands from accidentally changing the original exposure settings during the shooting process. In those places where the light is changing, we also need to check the exposure from time to ensure that we do not regret the exposure errors during shooting.

7. Zoom

Now let's focus on the photo part. In the composition, the first principle is to highlight the subject. Zoom to bring you closer to the shooting object. Do not leave too many backgrounds on the screen. We need to let the viewer focus on the subject of the picture.

8. Waiting for the climax to come

You may like to show off the stage from the very beginning. I know that many photographers have taken good photos in this way, but personally, I prefer to predict the peak moment of the performance in advance, and then carefully prepare for the arrival of this moment. After the climax, I usually use the camera's high-speed continuous shooting mode to quickly take a group of photos. Then, whenever there are interesting scenes, I will take several more photos. An attempt to predict the "peak time" of the performance helps you get better shooting results.

9. Do not ignore the intermittent periods of performances

This may sound strange, but the interval between performances is often a good time to raise the camera. The interval or interval I mentioned here contains two meanings. The first layer refers to the time when an action stops. For example, after a gymnastics athlete finishes a complete set of difficult actions, it will end with a final POSE, which is also suitable for dance and singing scenarios. Recording this POSE at this time will be a good shooting subject. Another advantage is that our subjects are relatively static when taking such photos, in this way, we don't have to worry about blurred photos.

The second type of intercept really refers to a moment like a midfield, an on-screen, or an inter-board break in a sports match. If it is a sports match, there will be some warm-up activities during this period, I think this will also be a good shooting topic. In addition, we usually get more freedom at this time, and try to change the shooting position without worrying about disturbing others.

10. Pay attention to the accuracy of focus

Since we use the maximum aperture for shooting, we will also face the problem of shortest depth. This means that the focus cannot be lost, and it cannot be compensated if there is a focal loss problem. So where do we need to focus? Assume that the subject we shot is a person, then there is no doubt that the focus should be on the person's eyes. If the two eyes are not on the same plane, choosing the latest one as the focus will be a good choice.

We can try to give auto focus more confidence, which can make our shooting process more comfortable. Most cameras are equipped with one-time autofocus and continuous autofocus modes. Many photographers prefer to use continuous autofocus to take mobile objects, because the focus is automatically adjusted based on the moving position of the object. I personally prefer the first mode, but don't have to worry about it. Just select what you like.

To help complete focus, we also need to make another decision, that is, whether to use "back button focus ". Normally, after we press the camera shutter halfway, the camera will automatically focus. However, we can also set the camera to press the button on the back of the machine before focusing. I personally prefer the second method, because the camera will not automatically adjust the focus. Either method works, but the back-of-the-machine button focus gives you more control.

11. Don't care about becoming an "orangutan"

Yes, I just want you to become an orangutan ". I mean there are some photographers who like to go back to the pictures through the LCD to make "oo" sound from time to time. It sounds like an orangutan is by your side. Of course, the question is not whether we should make a sound. What I want to emphasize is that we should develop the habit of reading photos frequently, especially when shooting low light dynamic photography theme, this approach is even more important. After all, there are too many things that may make mistakes, such as incorrect exposure, defocus, and inappropriate shutter speed. We need to ensure that our shooting is accurate. Don't wait until people go home to find that few photos are available.

Dynamic Image Shooting in low light is a severe test for our photographic equipment and shooting technology. We need a large aperture lens and a camera with high image quality and high focusing speed. Make good use of the tips in this article, set the camera before shooting, ensure that the exposure is accurate, and work hard to focus on technology. The last thing I want to talk about is that 99% of your efforts and 1% of your luck are of your successes.
