Now, some families already have more than two computers. To connect multiple computers in an office or two computers in a home to a simple peer-to-peer network, you can use third-party software, such as WinGate, SyGate, and WinProxy. This article describes how to use SyGate to implement multi-host access.

The SyGate software uses GateWay to allow multiple computers to share their ISP accounts to access the Internet. The advantage is that the installation and configuration are simple, and users do not need to perform further settings, which is easy to maintain and manage. Because SyGate uses low-level Packet Exchange technology, its performance is very superior and its support for various Internet protocols is satisfactory. Almost all application software can be used directly. The disadvantage is that you cannot set permissions for different users and cannot perform complicated management on users. Next we will talk about how to use the SyGate software to implement a telephone line in a small-scale LAN and multi-host internet access under one account.

  1. Hardware requirements and Installation

The hardware required to run SyGate is the general configuration of a computer capable of running Windows 9X. However, in order to be able to travel online, the level of hardware is naturally higher.

The network can be connected using a NIC compatible with the NE2000 ISA or PCI bus. It can be connected using a HUB connection or a twisted pair connection. It can also be connected using a thin cable with a BNC connection 50Ω to connect various terminals.

  2. Installation of network software for Win9X Microcomputer

When installing network settings, you must add the TCP/IP protocol and NetBEUI protocol. The SyGate software requires the TCP/IP protocol, And the NetBEUI protocol facilitates the access of the installed peer-to-peer network. The following describes how to add a network protocol.

Click Start and open control panel in the settings column ". Double-click "network" and check whether the preceding protocols are installed. If not, click "add... "; Select" protocol "; click" add... "; Select" Microsoft "in the left column, select the corresponding protocol in the right column, and click" OK ". Repeat "add... ", Install all required protocols.

Return to the configuration menu, and corresponding lines such as "TCP/IP → network adapter" and "NetBEUI → network adapter" should appear.

To enable mutual access and resource sharing in the Peer network, you also need to install network services. Click Add... "; Then click" service "; click" add... "; Select" Microsoft "in the left column," file and printer sharing for Microsoft Network "in the right column, and click" OK "to return to the network configuration. Click "file and printer sharing" and select "allow others to access my files" and "allow others to print to my printer ".

In addition, you need to set a network ID for each network micro-host to facilitate mutual access. Under the "ID" tab configured for the network, enter the computer name of the Local Machine, such as GW1, GW2, and GW3. Do not enter the other two columns. Follow "OK" to complete the network service configuration.

After the hardware and software are installed and correctly configured, restart the machine. Open "Network neighbors" on the desktop to view the computers connected to the network. To enable other computers to view local disk files and share other local resources, you must set the disk (file directory) to share and allow access by other users. Of course, you can set an access password to enhance security. In this way, the Windows 9X peer network is connected successfully. Then install the SyGate software.

  3. install and configure the SyGate Software

The SyGate software (Version 2.0 or later) must be installed on a computer directly connected to the Internet and must be correctly registered. We call this machine "proxy host", and other machines connected to this machine as clients. After installing the SyGate software, configure the SyGate in the "Configuration" window. If the "Enable dial-on-demand" item is set, the system can automatically dial up the Internet when a client's Internet connection request is detected; use "Auto Hang up after XX idleseconds" to set the idle time for SyGate to automatically disconnect the dial-up network connection? Quot; Start SyGate service automantically "determines whether SyGate runs as a service. You can read the online help of SyGate to obtain information about other settings. Second, you need to configure the TCP/IP attribute of this computer. The specific settings are as follows:

IP address = 192.168.0.1; subnet mask = 255.255.255.0; gateway = none; DNS is left unchanged, or DNS is enabled, host name = host or any, "Domain" is not filled, DNS search server order can be added to the IP address of the server of the ISP supplier.

You do not need to Install SyGate software on the client, but you need to configure the TCP/IP attribute and network ID of the client. The following describes the configuration items one by one:

The IP address is the internal IP address of the network. It depends on the subnet mask and the IP address of "proxy host". If the IP address of "proxy host" is set to 255.255.255.0, it starts from 192.168.0.2, it can be configured to 192.168.0.255, And the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0.

The GateWay is the internal GateWay address of the network. Add the IP address of "proxy host" When configuring;

DNS is the Domain Name Server address. During configuration, you must enable DNS. For the host name, you can set it to the user ID of the client. If "Domain" is not specified, you must add the IP address of "proxy host" to the DNS search server sequence.

  4. Configuration and use of Application Software

Take IE5.0 as an example. The "proxy host" still uses dial-up network connections. Other clients must use LAN connections. The specific settings are as follows:

Click the Internet icon on the Control Panel to go to Internet attribute settings. Click "Lan configuration" under the connection tab and select "Automatic Detection Settings". Do not select "use proxy server ".

For IE4.0, you only need to set up Internet access through the LAN. General applications do not require special settings.

First turn on the "proxy host", including the Modem power. After installation and configuration, start the browser of any client. The "proxy host" should be able to automatically dial (the dial-up network has been established and the user name and password have been set ). After the "proxy host" is connected to the Internet, you can browse the Internet from any client.
