Index is an extract of the main concepts or titles in the books and periodicals, indicating their origin, page numbers, and arranging them in a certain order for the information to be consulted. It is the address tag and lookup guide for important content in books. The reasonable index of designing scientific editors not only makes readers feel more convenient, but also is one of the important signs of the quality of books. Word provides indexing of book editing and typesetting, which is described in the following ways:

How to mark index entries in a document

to index, you should first mark index entries in the document, such as concept nouns, phrases, and symbols. The proposed index can be a part of the book, or it can be the whole of the same content in the book. If you mark all index entries for the same content in the book, you can select an index format and complete it, and then Word collects the index entries, sorts alphabetically, references page numbers, automatically finds and deletes the same items on the same page, and then displays the index in the document. Take the "materialism" in the marker as an example, first select "Materialism" in the text with the mouse, four words, then execute index and table of Contents on the Insert menu, and after the dialog box, select Mark Index Entry, and then after the next dialog box, select Mark and then "close." The "materialism" in the original text After the word "{XE" materialism "}" will appear, click the "Show/Hide" button on the toolbar to hide or display the mark. If you want to index all the "materialistic" places in this book, you can perform "Mark all" after the second dialog box, so that all the "materialistic" pages in the books will be labeled. The format of the index is optional, sorted by "stroke" and "Pinyin", the default is "stroke".

How to present tagged index entries

When the index tag is finished, you can extract the tagged index by moving the cursor to the end of the book and then executing the index and table of contents under the Insert menu, at which point an index appears at the cursor , if you chose "Mark All," The index will mark the page on which the word you are indexing appears. An index word appears on the same page multiple times, indexed to save pages, only once, and sorted by stroke or pinyin. This allows you to follow the index prompts to find the content of the page.

If you want to edit the resulting indexed format, you can select, customize, or change the items in the Index dialog box. Select a different index format by selecting the appropriate tab.

How to mark symbols such as @, *, ¥ as index entries

First select a single symbol in the document. Then execute the index command, in the dialog box that appearsMain Index entry box, type "; #" immediately following this symbol, and then click the Mark button. When indexing, Word places the symbol at the beginning of the index. If the selected index format contains headings for alphabetic groups, the symbols are grouped under the number flag # heading. You can either delete the number symbol or replace it with other headings such as "symbol".

How to update indexes, directory

in general, to index after entering all the contents of the document, if the content has since been modified, the original index is inaccurate, which requires updating the index by clicking the mouse in the index to be updated, Then press the F9 key. After the entire index is updated, the index completed before the update or the added format is lost. The

does not match the page number of the index with the page number in the document, if this occurs. You can update it by clicking the index and then pressing the F9 key.

If the document displays hidden text such as XE or TA fields after indexing, click the Show/Hide button to hide and then update the index. If your document contains a section break or page break that appears as a hidden text format, delete the hidden text formatting and then update the index so that the page is displayed clearly and beautifully.
