Typically, host users use DFSMSHSM to back up or migrate data, and the backed-up or migrated data is DFSMSHSM stored in a larger and cheaper tape volumes (using tape devices such as ATL, VTS, etc.) for safekeeping.

Storage hierarchy as shown in Figure 1-01:HSM

Applicable scenario:

When the user's hardware for the tape is upgraded, the old hardware is typically replaced with the new tape hardware. Because new tapes often have the advantage of speed and capacity, users may want to move large amounts of data to new tape systems as quickly as possible to enjoy the convenience of new devices.

Where users want to move DFSMSHSM migration and backup data to a new tape system as soon as possible while removing old tapes, users can use the DFSMSHSM recycle command to quickly store on old tapes DFSMSHSM Migration and backup data are moved to new tapes.

Noun Explanation:

Migration or backup tape VOLUME:DFSMSHSM when data is backed up or migrated, a tape volume dedicated to backup functionality is known as backup tape volume, and a tape volume dedicated to migration is called migration Tape volume.

Recycle command: DFSMSHSM's recycle command can move data from one or more migration or backup tape volume to one or several migration or backup tape volume, and release the tape volumes specified by the Recycle command into the available scratch state.

The general use is to select volumes that have a smaller volume of storage data as recycle processed, so that the volume of these stored data is freed up to be reused. For example, a volume with recyclepercent 25 (that is, 25% or less of the disk space being used will be processed by the Recycle command).

There are multiple parameters to control the input volume selected for recycle command processing:

1 The All,backup,daily,ml2,spill parameters of the Recycle command, which specify which types of volumes will be processed by the Recycle command.

2) The recyclepercent parameter of DFSMSHSM, Volumes that are less than or equal to the parameter will be processed by the Recycle command (when the recycle command's percentvalid parameter is not specified, the DFSMSHSM's recyclepercent parameter takes effect).

3 The Percentvalid parameter of the Recycle command, the volume that stores the amount of data less than or equal to this parameter will be processed by the Recycle command.

4 the Select parameter of the Recycle command, which optionally contains or does not contain a range of volumes based on the volume name.

As shown in Figure 2-01:HSM's recycle command, a blank tape after recycle will be reused
