Internet Explorer 5.0, when Windows 98 is upgraded, makes web browsing faster, neater, and simpler. But IE5 's default settings require some change, and some of its best features are also buried.
If you are a user of Netscape Navigator, please do not skip this section, you will find that IE5 and its competitors are very well together and for some tasks (such as the Complete preservation of web pages), IE is a better solution. If you use Quicken or some other application that combines with the resource manager, you will not be selected--ie is an automatic pop-up browser.
Password protection
IE5 adds a potentially dangerous new capability to the automatic completion feature of Internet Explorer. Not only do you simply prompt for the remainder of a URL in the Address bar, this option provides you with a user name and password that allows you to automatically log on to a password-protected web site. This is a hidden security vulnerability: If you save the username and password of your bank and broker's business account, anyone who uses your PC can log in and get this information. This option is relatively secure on a Windows NT Workstation because you can prevent unauthorized users from logging on to your PC, but Windows 98 users should disable this option. From any IE5 window, select the Internet option under the Tools menu, click the Content tab, and then click the AutoComplete button. The user name and password entries for the form are not selected in the area that is marked as "Apply to AutoComplete". If you have inadvertently saved some sensitive information, also click the Clear Password button. Reboot your system to make sure that the settings change has taken effect.
