In-depth introduction to SharePoint-WSS upgrade and data migration

Environment Description: we are currently using WSS2.0, and want to upgrade to WSS3.0, and ensure that the data of the original site is intact.

Our upgrades and data migration are mainly divided into two methods (the second method is recommended ):

1. Upgrade the installation method:

1. Run prescan.exe first before configuring the pilot program. This is the bin directory under the 12 directory.

2. Install WSS3.0 first. There are several options during installation. It is best to select the first option, which is the second option by default. If option 2 is selected, after WSS3.0 is installed, all websites on the server will be automatically upgraded, but there is a great risk. Therefore, we recommend that you select option 1 and perform a gradual upgrade, in this way, a website can be upgraded. If the upgrade fails, the website can be recovered, which is relatively safe.

3. after the configuration is complete, open the Management Center. First, start the required services in "operations> services on the server farm", and then click "operations> Upgrade and migrate ", select "website content upgrade status ".

4. In "website content upgrade status", you can view all WSS2.0 websites, select the website you want to upgrade, and then select "Start upgrade ".

5. after you click "Start upgrade", there will be an upgrade page. Instead of directly upgrading the original site database and Web site, a new database and new site will be created, then, the original WSS2.0 site is changed to another port or Host header. After the upgrade, the original WSS2.0 site is still accessible. When you delete the upgraded WSS3.0 site, the original WSS2.0 site will be automatically changed back. This is very important, because if there are too many problems with the site after the upgrade, you still have to back up.

6. WSS3.0 checks the database first and then provides an information list. The name of the upgraded database is also provided. If everything is okay, click the "upgrade Website" button. the upgrade process takes different time based on the database size and number of websites.

7. After the upgrade, the upgraded page is displayed, and you can access the newly upgraded site. If there is no accident, you can access the upgraded site normally.

8. The following are some suggestions for upgrading WSS2.0 to WSS3.0:
A: backup is the bottom line because the real environment is complex and cannot be guaranteed.
B: First, perform the upgrade test on a test machine or virtual machine. After the upgrade is successful, the upgrade will be performed in the real environment.
C: After the upgrade, the page customized by Frontpage may have a small problem in display. You only need to use SharePoint Designer to modify it again. This is not a big problem.
D: If you use SQL Server2000 for WSS2.0, you can continue to use SQL Server2000 for the upgraded site during WSS3.0 upgrade, you can also consider using SQL Server2005 for the upgraded site. If you use SQL Server2000, add SQL Server2000 SP4 and subsequent patches.
E: After installing WSS3.0, we recommend that you create a Web Application first to check whether WSS3.0 works properly. If WSS3.0 cannot work properly after it is installed, then do not upgrade.

2. Additional content database

1. Since the first method has been described in detail, Here we only describe the detailed steps. Before the upgrade, run prescan.exe first.
2. After prescan.exe is successfully run, copy the mdf and ldf files of the WSS2.0 content database to ~ \ MSSQL1.1 \ data directory, and then attach the database.
3. Open the WSS3.0 management center and choose "Application Management"> "create or expand Web applications" to create a new Web Application.
4. Choose "Application Management"> "content database". Here, you will delete the content database of the Web Application you just created.
5. "Start-> Run", Enter cmd to enter the command mode, and enter cd ~ \ Program Files \ Common Files \ Microsoft Shared \ web server extensions \ 12 \ BIN to enter the directory.
6. Run the following command to append WSS2.0's content database: stsadm-o addcontentdb-url URL-databasename database name-databaseserver database server name.
URL: URL of WSS3.0 Web Application. This url will be used in wss3.0. For example, we upgraded wsssh01 of wss2.0 to spswss of wss3.0 in actual upgrade.
Database Name: Name of the content Database.
Database Server Name: Name of the WSS3.0 Database Server.
7. Under normal circumstances, after the upgrade, the upgraded URL set will appear in the Web Application.
