What is vertical storage? How does this new technology improve storage capacity and stability?

Have you ever heard of the Super Paramagnetic effect (superparamagnetic effect)? This is a theory that limits the size of available hard disks. (e.g., no more than 120G, etc.). Simply put, when the magnets on the disk become too small, they will not be able to maintain the correct orientation of the magnetic field at room temperature, resulting in a null bit. Empty bits = missing data = useless storage. As a result, scientists and engineers studying magnetic storage are looking for new solutions. At least so far, the super paramagnetic effect has not been solved. As a result, the HDD Engineer analyzed the current drive structure. The data stored on the hard drive now uses the vertical recording method. For example, the hard disk looks like a platform with a lot of small dominoes, each of which represents a bit of information. In the longitudinal recording mode, each domino is placed on the disk plane parallel to the north-south level of the magnetic force. When each bit of data is getting closer and nearer, the phenomenon of hyper paramagnetic may occur.

Workaround: Vertical Recording

At present, the data bits in the disk are placed horizontally, and in the vertical recording mode, they are standing vertically, that is, in the same space, you can put more data bits, can be a good solution to the Super paramagnetic effect. Now, the same space can accommodate more data bits without getting them too close. (The distance between data bits is called the transition area).

As you would expect, disk usage is different in vertical recording mode than in vertical recording. Vertical recording means the head is better because it has a smaller range of work. And, surprisingly, the vertical approach is better fault tolerant than the vertical one.

In a horizontal recording mode, the north and south poles of each data bit are attracted and repelled by the north-south level of the adjacent data bits. However, in the vertical recording mode, the north-South level vertical up or down, it solves the conflict between the Poles, reducing the number of empty data bits. Another difference between the old and the new is the stacking of the underlying software below the data bits. The new flat layer improves the reliability of the hard disk head reading and writing. Simply put, the new layer is more stable and the yin-yang level, to avoid the hard drive system instability.

What does it mean for you to have vertical records? What would you think if you could get 10 times times the storage capacity with just a little more cost? Vertical storage, as a result of changes in the way data bits are placed (and, of course, some other improvements) will likely increase the existing storage capacity by 10 times times. But these new disks will eventually run into the hyper-paramagnetic effect, but scientists are already trying to develop the next generation of disks.

Vertical disks are already on the market, and if you don't know it, how ingenious these disks are: These disks only change the way they are logged, but they can still be used for existing interfaces, which means you can also include such disks in existing systems. For example, you can purchase a Seagate Momentus 5400 disk with a parallel or serial ATA interface.

Hitachi has produced some short films explaining vertical recording techniques. If you have flash, you can see this three-minute clip.
