Brief introduction

As a major IBM data server for high-capacity online transaction processing (OLTP) and integrated applications, IDS has supported thousands of companies to add new applications and dynamically develop their business. As these companies develop and increase their business, IDS can meet their needs accordingly, while maintaining and managing costs are low. In most cases, because of the high efficiency of IDS, these companies do not need to make significant upgrades to the infrastructure during their development. There is no need for continuous hardware upgrades to provide the right performance for increased workloads. In some cases, companies may consider using more powerful hardware, sometimes running the same operating system, and sometimes changing the operating system. Because IDS has a wide range of applicability, this conversion can be very smooth, with short downtime (not even).

Simply put, this means that no matter what operating system you run on Ids,ids there will be no significant operational or administrative problems, so you can manage your application requirements based on the characteristics of your business. Another advantage of IDS is that it supports the broadest range of operating systems in the IBM data server family, including Windows®, HP-UX, Sun Solaris, SGI IRIX, aix® and linux®-iseries™,-pseries®,-xseri es® and-zseries®. For a long time, through the use of virtual table Interface (VTI) and virtual Index Interface (VII), IDS enables programmers to store data servers (such as spreadsheets, word processing documents, ISAM structures, Flat files, and so on) creates primary and secondary access methods for data objects. You can use IBM Informix Enterprise Gateway Manager to extend the IDS SQL API, support transparent access to non-IBM relational databases (such as Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server), and non-relational data sources (more than such as Virtual Storage Access method [VSAM] and ims®) materialized as relational tables. Recent improvements support the use of other non-standard data sources, such as XML and Message Queuing, in the data server. Application developers can use these features to create a company-wide data model that enables in-place (in-place) access to data anywhere in the enterprise.

However, the data server features and features that each customer needs are not the same. In some cases, this is a technical decision, such as a customer may not need to Enterprise Replication or some advanced backup and recovery features. In other cases, this decision is affected by licensing requirements and related costs. From a product point of view, IDS can be well adapted to both of these situations. Customers can determine the features and features to be installed at the time of installation to meet their current requirements and license terms. If their requirements change or purchase licenses for more functionality, you can easily add (or remove) functionality to meet your needs. From a licensing perspective, you can purchase different versions of IDS, each of which is priced and functionally tailored to different segments of the market. Regardless of which version is purchased, IDS provides a complete Dynamic scalable architecture (DSA) implementation that delivers exceptional performance, reliability, ease of use, and availability. Pricing varies according to functionality and scalability. These versions and their feature sets are briefly compared below.

IBM IDS Developer Edition (ids-de)-This version is only for application development and testing, it offers a complete set of features at a very attractive price: FREE! Ids-de contains all the features in the Enterprise Edition. It contains scalability restrictions on unproductive use, including limitations on processing power, memory, and storage space. It can be used on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of many operating systems. IBM does not provide formal support for ids-de. However, there are many forums in the IDS development community that can join these forums and seek help and support. Simply install the new data server binaries and you can upgrade the Ids-de directly to any other version.

IBM IDS Express Edition (ids-express)-this version is suitable for small and midsize enterprises that require enterprise-class OLTP performance but do not require all the extra features or are unwilling to incur additional costs. This version is licensed by the "authorized user" and the Processor value unit (UNIT,VU). It is limited to each physical server, VU and 4 GB of RAM, and can only be used on 32-bit Linux and Windows. Simply install the new data server binaries and you can upgrade the ids-express directly to any other version.

IBM IDS Workgroup Edition (IDS-WGE)-this version is suitable for midsize companies or as a departmental server in enterprise deployments. This version can be used on all supported operating systems, with a hardware limit higher than ids-express: each physical server, VU, and 8 GB of RAM. However, the IDS Workgroup license model is not the same. It can be licensed in accordance with authorized users, concurrent sessions, and processor VU.

The IDS Workgroup Edition provides additional data server functionality through an optional Parallel performance for Workgroup Feature to support partitioning, parallel queries, high-performance loaders, and concurrent backup and recovery. You can use Parallel data Query to preserve the database server resources for complex SQL operations. As an option for Parallel performance, you can also use the parallel backup and recovery options in the high performance Loader and On-bar utility suite. The IDS Workgroup instance can be used as a leaf node (that is, a target) in a Enterprise Replication (ER) cluster to receive data updates from other nodes in the cluster. Finally, the optional feature high-availability Data Replication (HDR) can be purchased to instantiate the disaster recovery hot site failover node.

IBM IDs Enterprise Edition (Ids-ee)-This version contains all the features of the IDs Workgroup and does not have scalability limitations to provide the highest OLTP performance. This version can be licensed according to the processor VU, concurrent session, or authorized user. This version contains full HDR and ER functionality, but has a limited number of Datablade to the data server, such as space, node, and basic Text Search Datablade. Starting with IDS 11, you can purchase optional features such as Advanced Access control and continuous availability Feature. The former provides label-based access control (LBAC), which is a mandatory form of data access controls. The latter allows access to the complete set of MACH-11 attributes, which is used to create a high-availability structure for the instance.

You can grant IDs license by using one of three pricing methods as needed. These methods are briefly described below:

Note: The definition of licensing is only briefly described here. These statements are not comprehensive and do not address legal issues. See the IDS License Agreement for a complete description.

VU (also known as a processor based pricing method)-Calculates the product of the core number of processors in the physical server and the value units corresponding to the processor architecture. This pricing method does not limit the number of users or connection licenses, which is often the best choice when the user or session load cannot be controlled or calculated.

Authorized user-Allows a named user to access an IDS instance on a physical server. This authorized user can establish multiple connections to the IDS instance on the server. Each connection is used only by this authorized user from a client device.

Concurrent Sessions-A logical connection that allows the creation of an IDS instance from a client device to a physical server. Whether multiple users establish a connection through a client device or a user establishes multiple connections, each connection (whether or not it is active) requires a license. If you use a connection concentrator or multiplexer in the application path, calculate the number of concurrent sessions based on the situation on the client device, rather than at the IDS layer.

These pricing models are not available on all IDS versions.
