Introduction to ESXi Virtual Network Configuration

After playing ESXi for a few days, the virtual network configuration can be easily summarized in some circles. At present, it cannot be said that it is very proficient, but it can be accumulated.

The following is a simple server network deployment diagram. Three networks are planned in the topology. One is the Internet: WAN, and the other is the office network: LAN (access in the office environment ), one is Private LAN (server Private network ).

If a network topology is built on a physical machine, I believe many people will. However, if the three hosts are on ESXi, there may be some conceptual things to be clarified, next we will talk about concepts and settings.

1. How to set the ESXi Server IP address?

In fact, the IP address of the ESXi server is not specified in the topology. People who are new to ESXi, especially those who often access Windows, may want to set IP addresses for all NICs, however, ESXi has already been prompted clearly in the network settings. It is set to the ESXi IP address. If Server Load balancer does not use the NIC, you only need to enable one Nic.

Previously, I set an intranet IP address and enabled an intranet and Internet Nic. As a result, the client is unstable when connecting to the ESXi server. Sometimes it can be connected and sometimes cannot be connected.

Therefore, the IP address of the ESXi server is the management IP address. Generally, you can set an IP address and start the NIC corresponding to the IP address.

2. If the NIC of Guest OS is connected to the NIC of ESXi, do I need to bind an IP address to the NIC of ESXi?

No. The Guest System is the system running on ESXi. You can directly configure the IP address in the Guest system. You do not need to configure IP addresses for the ESXi Nic.

3. ESXi Virtual Switch Settings

The ESXi Configuration Network is in the Configuration-> Networking of vSphere Clinet.

Based on the previous network topology planning, create three vswitches in the network configuration, which correspond to the WAN, LAN, PAN, these three vswitches do not have to be created. You can modify the lable from the original vSwitch.

If you create a new Network, you can simply click Add Network in the Virtual Switch view, select Virtual Machine in the connection type, and select a physical Network card in Virtual Machines-Network Access, generally, the corresponding network IP address information is displayed at the end of the ENI.

Next, set the name and vlan id of the vSwitch (none by default ). Click Next to confirm.

4. Configure Guest OS to use vSwitch

This step is easy. On the Guest OS configuration page, select a Network Lable for each Nic.

5. ipsettings of Guest OS

In Guest OS, you can set the IP address based on the network topology. However, you must set the gateway for the NIC of the external network segment. Otherwise, you cannot access the Internet on Guest OS or be accessed from the Internet.
