WEB Application

WEB application is created by SharePoint 2013 Products (not created directly in IIS) and is an IIS Site. It contains all of the SharePoint Site collections and is the highest level in the SharePoint logical architecture. You can isolate it by selecting the application pool so that it does not affect other Web application because of a Web application crash, which improves security.

Application Pool

The application pool can contain one or more Web application that allow you to isolate different Web application on the same server. Each application pool runs one or more worker Process (w3wp.exe). The Worker process is responsible for managing all request and response.

Content Database

Hosts the content of all SharePoint Web application, you can associate one or more content databases for a WEB application.

The SharePoint site Collection (site collection) consists of a root web (the primary site) and all sites (sites) under that site. Each site can contain a list and a library. The List and library are used to store data in a SharePoint site, such as item, Documents. So the SharePoint Web application Logical structure as shown in the following illustration:
