To create a new document that conforms to XHTML, do the following:
Select "File" > "new".
The New Document dialog box appears.

Select a document type.
Select the "Make document conform to XHTML" option.
Note: Not all document types can be made to conform to XHTML.

Click OK.
To create documents that conform to XHTML by default, do the following:
Select Edit > Preferences or Dreamweaver > Preferences (MAC OS X), and then select the new document category.
In the new document category, select a document type and select the Make document conform to XHTML option.
Click OK.
To make an existing HTML document conform to XHTML, do the following:
Open the document, and then do one of the following:
For documents that do not contain frames, select File > Convert > XHTML.
For the document that contains the frame, select a frame and select File > Transform > XHTML. To convert the entire document, repeat this step for each frame and for the frames page document.
Note: You cannot convert an instance of a template because an instance of the template must use the same language as the template on which it is based. For example, a document based on an XHTML template will always be XHTML, and documents based on XHTML-compliant HTML templates will always be HTML and cannot be converted to XHTML or other languages.
