Management metadata service Introduction Series 4

The main functions of managed metadata service are divided into two parts: content type publishing and Management of tags and keywords.

 

Next we will give a brief introduction to the main terms involved in MMs.

 

Taxonomy

In SharePoint 2010, we define taxonomy as the level of the term. For example, the following example can represent a taxonomy in SharePoint 2010.

• Colors
• HTML colors
• Blue
• Aqua
• Black
• Object colors
• Almond
• Antique brass

 

Folksonmy

Taxonomy is defined as a level of term and is centrally managed by a user group called taxonomy administrators. the corresponding folksonomy is not formal. in SharePoint 2010, folksonomy refers to the optional capabilities of end users, which allow users to enter their own tags and metadata. sharePoint 2010 has the ability to deal with the metadata of taxonomy under strict control, as well as the free form of metadata like folksonomy.

 

Term store

Term store is a database that stores metadata and enables these metadata to be used through the shared service. This shared service is MMs.

 

Term

Term is a simple string with a unique identifier, which exists on a node in term store.

 

Tagging

Tagging is the relationship between some metadata and a list item. In SharePoint 2010, almost everything can be added with Tag. tagging can be divided into two types: Social tagging and authoritative tagging.

• Authoritative tagging: In authoritative tagging, you have ownership of the tag. for example, I have a document and I have the right to modify it. Therefore, I can add the metadata to this document.
• Social tagging: in social tagging, I may not have ownership of something, but I have some ideas about it. I have no permission to modify this item, but I can add some metadata for it. these metadata will be stored somewhere.

In the preceding two cases, data is stored in the same backend metadata database.

 

Keywords

Keyword is not only a string, but also a string that you enter to a non-structured location in the background of SharePoint 2010 through the term store. if I enter a keyword, the system will check whether this keyword has been added before. if so, the system returns an ID to me. If not, create an ID in term storezhong and return it to me.
