Matthew effect: one of the dark rules of search engines

The Chinese have an old saying: "Learning to use ". For a few years, I have been writing this sentence as a god, because I only use it to see the effect of learning, understand the shortcomings of learning, and enjoy the joy of learning.
The development of search engines in the past two years has not been a major breakthrough, but is gradually becoming mature and business-oriented. In the past two years, I spent some of my spare time doing some development and research. When I learned more about it, I ended up with a single shot of my horse. Future interests may turn to the classification technology, so we hope to use this series to bring the end to this growth period.
The so-called dark rules are actually very obvious rules in life, but they are not so prominent in the search engine field, the main reason is that the search engine is still developing and the market is still intensifying competition. These dark rules are more or less reflected in the current search engine. I believe that one day, these rules will be clearer and deeper.

One of the search engine dark rules
The New Testament, Matthew, has a story in which a king gave each of the three servants a silver ingot before traveling and told them: "You are going to do business. When I come back, see me again. "When the King came back, the first servant said," Master, I have earned 10 ingots for the silver ingot you gave us. "So the king rewarded him with 10 cities. The second servant reported, "Master, I have earned 5 ingots for the silver ingot you gave me.
"So the king rewarded him with five cities. The third servant reported: "My master, I have been saving the silver ingot you gave me in my towel. I am afraid of losing it and have never taken it out. "Then the king ordered the silver ingot of the third servant to be rewarded with the first servant, and said," If there are few, he will take all his money. If there are too many, give it to him to help him. "
This is the Matthew effect.
Simply put, it is to make the rich and the poor richer.
For search engines, the Matthew effect is a dark rule. After 10 years of development, google and yahoo have become the absolute mainstream in the market. The sharing trend of profits is similar to these super-large search engines, rather than small and medium search engines.
For example, you can create a search engine with 1/1000 of google's traffic (this number is not large, the number of independent IP addresses is about 60 thousand every day, and PageView is 0.3 million, about 3 or 4 booso.com .), But the return you get and the value of this search engine are definitely no more than 1/1000 of google's (this is about $60 million, or 0.5 billion RMB ).
The Matthew effect can also be reflected in the market tends to be differentiated, and tends to make the market share concentrated on one or two giants. Because the market's investment in the leader will get a higher percentage of return, the opportunities for advertising/cooperation will also follow the Matthew effect and become the leader.
The Matthew effect is also manifested in the ability to aggregate more capital and manpower to expand this advantage when search engines become the leader, such as starting a series of other businesses such as Mp3, Pic search, and Vedio, consolidate and expand the advantages.
So where is the value of small and medium-sized search engines?
The market is cruel. It can be predicted that most small and medium-sized search engines will perish from an economic point of view. What can be preserved will not be simply a search engine, it may be acquired by a website to become its value-added. It may be switched to an enterprise's internal search and other fields that have not yet been significantly differentiated in the current market.
