Introduction
For graduate students or researchers, they need to read a large number of documents. A lot of time is often wasted in such trivial matters: searching, downloading PDF files, renaming and saving, and searching for local files. At this time, an excellent reference management software will be of great use.
Mendeley is a free cross-platform reference management software that supports Linux, Mac, windows, and IOS. Mendeley.com is also an online academic social network.
Function
- Search for documents online
- After adding a PDF file, the system automatically detects the question, author, Journal/conference, and year of the paper, and extracts abstract, keywords, and other information.
- You can set to automatically monitor a directory/folder.
- PDF can be read and tagged. (There are not many PDF readers in Linux. I used mendeley directly to read PDF files ). You can add remarks to the file and write down your thoughts on reading paper.
- You can automatically rename a PDF file according to the specified format (for example, author-Journal-Year-Question) based on the detected information, and automatically create folder category management according to the set rules.
- The system automatically backs up your reference library to the network. After logging on to different machines, you can ensure that the same content is available. Users have 2 GB of online space (10 in 2014 ).
- Powerful Community functions. Interact with other researchers at mendeley.com and join groups.
- MS Word is supported after the plug-in is used. (I have never used this, and I feel that it is of little use ).
Run Interface

On the settings page, automatically Rename and save the settings to a specified directory.
Install
For Linux, download and unzip the package directly, and run the bin/mendeley executable file in the directory.
Mac can be found in app store.
Download the corresponding installation package for Windows.
Create a desktop entry
In Linux, It is very troublesome to open and decompress the directory every time and run it. You can simplify it in the following ways.
In ~ /. Create an alias in bashrc by adding the following line
Alias mendeley = "nohup ~ /APP/mendeley/bin/mendeley &"
The specific path depends on the decompressed directory.
For Ubuntu, if you want to see it in unity, or you can fix it to launcher (start bar on the left), you can create a desktop entry.
We know that in Ubuntu, the desktop entry is in the/usr/share/applications/directory, which is a file in the form of *. desktop.
Use the root permission to create a mendeley. desktop in this directory. The content is as follows:
1 [Desktop Entry]2 Type=Application3 Icon=/home/smile/App/mendeley/share/icons/hicolor/128x128/apps/mendeleydesktop.png4 Name=mendeley5 Comment="Start mendeley desktop"6 Exec=/home/smile/App/mendeley/bin/mendeley7 Categories=Utility;
Then, modify the permission
sudo chmod a+x mendeley.desktop
In this way, mendeley can be displayed in unity, or it can be fixed to launcher.
