Near-Field Communication (NFC)

Near-Field Communication, also known as short-range wireless communication, is a short-range high-frequency wireless communication technology that allows non-contact point-to-point data transmission and data exchange between electronic devices.

Communication does not have to be performed between two handheld devices, for example, between two mobile phones. It can also work on mobile devices and certain targets, such as the sales Terminal System of the store cashier, with built-in labels for near-field communication chips, trademark tags, posters, prints or cards. For these simple targets, the near-field communication chip does not require battery support. On the contrary, the chip is passive and can be activated by generating a Wireless RF field from another device.

How to use mobile terminal near-field communication

On mobile phones, there are three different ways to use near-field communication:

  1. Full integration with mobile phones:Near-Field Communication, especially on newer devices, can be fully integrated with mobile phones. This means that the near-field communication controller (the component responsible for actual communication) and the security component (the security data area connected to the near-field communication controller) are integrated into the mobile phone itself. An example of a mobile phone that fully integrates near-field communication is the Google Nexus S recently released by Google and Samsung.
  2. Integrated into SIM card:In addition, near-field communication can be integrated into SIM cards, which can identify the cards of mobile phone subscribers on the carrier's cellular network.
  3. Integrate to the microSD card:Near-Field Communication technology can also be integrated into the microSD card, which is a mobile memory card that uses flash memory. Many mobile phone users use microSD cards to store pictures, videos, applications, and other files to save storage space on their mobile phones. For mobile phones without microSD card slot, use mobile phone accessories instead. For example, visa has launched a cell phone set for the iPhone with a microSD card, bringing near-field communication technology to iPhone users.

Does your mobile phone provide near-field communication?

If you are not sure whether your mobile phone has the near-field communication function (or you are considering buying a mobile phone with this function ), the near-field communications world website published an existing mobile phone that supports this technology, a mobile phone that will be listed in the future, or a mobile phone that is rumored to have this function. What can we do with near-field communication?

Because the near-field communication technology is still a new technology, its purpose depends on your living environment and the services available around you. In some markets, especially in some countries in Asia and Europe, near-field communication has become very popular. But in the United States, mainstream consumers do not know much about it.

Near-Field Communication on mobile devices: Three use modes

There are three main modes on mobile devices that can use near-field communication technology.

  1. Credit card-like Mode
  2. Reader mode
  3. P2P mode (Point-to-Point Mode)

In imitation credit card mode, near-field communication devices can be used as credit cards, debit cards, identification cards, or tickets. The credit card-like mode can be used to implement the "Mobile Wallet" function.

In reader mode, near-field communication devices can read tags. This is similar to how bar code scanning works today. For example, you can use an app on your phone to scan the barcode to obtain other information. In the end, near-field communication will replace bar code reading into a more popular technology.

In P2P mode, information can be exchanged between near-field communication devices. For example, two mobile phones with the near-field communication function can exchange contact information, which is similar to the application exchange contact method such as bump on iPhone and Android phones, but they use different technologies.

Instance

To better understand the Application of Near-Field Communication, the following examples are provided.

  • Mobile Wallet (mobile phone shopping as credit card or debit card)
  • Mobile ticket (you can buy tickets on your mobile phone in the public transportation system)
  • Smart display boards, cards, labels, and so on (people can use mobile phones to read tags for other information; for example, reading movie posters, watching movie trailers, reading business cards, and integrating contact information with mobile phones)
  • Key (use near-field communication technology to open the hotel door)
  • Connect to the network (use the mobile phone to read tags to connect to Bluetooth or log on to the Wi-Fi network)

There are countless examples of near-field communication technology, and everything is just getting on the road.

The latest version of Google's Android mobile operating system supports near-field communication. In addition to reading tags, it also supports data exchange (read/write ). Android Market already has some applications with near-field communication functions, such as restaurant coupons, creating and
Reading NFC tags, NFC
Widgets and other applications. More and more applications with near-field communication functions will be available in the future.
