We often use SLIP, PPP, PPPoE, and other protocols to create dial-up connections during dial-up and ADSL Broadband Internet access, this section describes the SLIP, PPP, PPPoE, L2TP, and PPTP protocols related to network transmission.

SLIP Protocol

Note: Serial Line Internet Protocol (Serial Line Internet Protocol) is an old industrial standard for Windows Remote Access, mainly used in Unix Remote Access Servers. Because the SLIP protocol is designed for low-speed serial lines, it can be used for dedicated lines or dial-up lines. The transmission rate of Modem is between 1200bps and 19200bps.

Application: Set the SLIP protocol in Windows. For example, in Windows 98, if "dial-up connection" has been created, right-click the connection and select "properties ". In the displayed Properties window, select the "server type" tab and select "SLIP: Unix connection" in "dial-up network server type ". Finally, click OK.

PPP protocol

Note: The Point-to-Point Protocol (Point-to-Point Protocol) is a sub-Protocol in the TCP/IP network Protocol set. It is mainly used to create telephone lines and connections between ISDN dial-up and ISP access, provides multiple authentication methods, data compression and encryption, and notification IP addresses. The PPP protocol is an alternative to the SLIP protocol, and there is no major difference in functionality.

Application: If Windows 98 is used, a "dial-up connection" has been created ". You can set the PPP protocol using the following method: First, open the "dial-up connection" attribute and select the "server type" tab. Then, select the default "PPP: Internet, windows NT Server, Windows 98 "(1). In advanced options, you can set other options for this Protocol. Finally, click OK.

PPPoE Protocol

Note: The full name is Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet). Simply put, it is the Protocol that combines Ethernet and PPP, it is widely used in ADSL access. Through PPPoE technology and broadband Modem (such as ADSL Modem), we can implement personal authentication access for high-speed broadband networks, create virtual dial-up connections for each user, and connect to the Internet at high speed.

Application: in Windows XP, a virtual dialing tool with PPPoE protocol is provided. The specific creation method is as follows: First, open "network connection "; click "Create a new connection" under "network task" on the left of the window to open the "New Connection Wizard" and click "Next". In the network connection type, select "connect to Internet ", click "Next", select "manually set my connections" in the displayed window, and click "Next "; in the Internet connection window, select "connect with a broadband connection that requires the user name and password" (2), click "Next", and enter the ISP name, such as "ADSL ", click "Next". Enter the user name, password, and password, and click "Next". Finally, click "finish.

PPTP Protocol

Note: Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (Point-to-Point tunnel Protocol) is a new enhanced security Protocol developed on the basis of the PPP Protocol, multi-Protocol Virtual Private Network (VPN) is supported. You can use password authentication protocol (PAP) and scalable authentication protocol (EAP) to enhance security. This allows remote users to access CEN through an ISP, a direct connection to the Internet, or other networks.

Application: You can use PPTP or L2TP When Using VPN. The specific settings are as follows: for example, in Windows XP, first, in the network connection window, right-click a VPN connection and choose Properties ". Then, select the "network" tab in the Open Properties window. Select "pptp vpn" (3) in "VPN type" and click "OK.

L2TP protocol

Note: Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol (Layer 2 tunnel Protocol) is an industrial standard Internet tunnel Protocol with similar functions as the PPTP Protocol, for example, you can also encrypt network data streams. However, there are also differences. For example, PPTP requires that the network be an IP network, while L2TP requires point-to-point connection for data packets. PPTP uses a single tunnel, while L2TP uses multiple tunnels. L2TP provides Header Compression and tunnel verification, PPTP does not.

Application: Set the L2TP connection in the VPN connection in the same way as the pptp vpn settings, also in the "network" tab of the VPN connection Properties window, set the VPN type to "L2TP IPSec VPN.
