New Application Mode of ArcGIS and drone video integration

1 Overview

Drones are a new data collection platform. They can quickly and efficiently obtain first-hand images and video materials. In ArcGIS 10.1, they can integrate drone videos with GIS, this gives full play to the value of drone videos.

In ArcGIS 10.1 for desktop, you can manage drone videos, for example:

We can see that this example manages three drone videos, which can be played, metadata viewed, and map positioning.

1.1 Monitoring video playback

The most basic function is to play drone videos. For example, in the following example, a video is taken on farmland to view Crop Growth and pest and disease conditions:

1 drone Element Acquisition

Another application is to use drones to capture geographical elements and synchronously update maps. For example, if a green container is found in the middle, the tank trucks are not marked on the map:

Open the editing status and you can see the element editing template:

First, the outline of the green container is outlined in the drone video. Synchronized editing on the map forms the elements of the container:

Next, add a tank truck and click it on the video to automatically update the map:

You can view the attributes of the newly added tank car elements. It is a standard ArcGIS Element Object:

1. Spatial Analysis

You can directly use the added elements for spatial analysis. For example, fireworks are prohibited around tank trucks. You can perform a security area analysis as an analysis tool:

Switch to the thermal infrared video, monitor the fire area, and find a man:

Enlarge the video and see the man holding a heat source in his hand and putting it on his lips. This is obviously smoking, which is a big security risk:

This application is so dazzling that drones can monitor the movements of a person from a distance. Combined with GIS analysis, we know that smoking around a tank truck is very dangerous.

From this example, we can see that drone videos, combined with GIS technology, can be applied in many businesses, such as emergency relief. Policy makers can immediately see the disaster situation at the scene, quickly identify the number of people affected and the location of the people waiting for rescue.
