This Photoshop tutorial shows you all the steps of using photos to process Navi avatars (based on James Cameron's movie "Avatar".) Soup suggested to go to the cinema to see, the effect is quite good ~). In order to create him I use Photoshop CS2, but it should be the same with the old and new versions, because I only use the basic Photoshop tools. I hope it will be of some help to you.
Step 1
Import the photos you choose, but make sure it's bigger and give it more space to play with. At the same time, make sure the photo is light enough so that it is visible in sharp detail.
Step 2
Select the hard brush from the tools window (I tend to use the chalk brush) and set its mode to color, with opacity of 50%. Now, choose Blue from your palette. Smear on the entire skin, ignoring hair, eyes and clothes. Now use different shades of blue to repeat several times. To get the kind of blue I wanted, I repeated 4 times with these colors: #5d7a99 – #32576a – #3c6986 – #54809b. However, each photo is different, so you can choose the different shades of blue you like.
Finally, choose Purple, I use the #472a50, use the small brush, opacity set to 10%, smear on the lip, then randomly smear on the face, make it look more "natural".
Step 3
Now, I'm going to deal with Tom Cruise's scum. Because the Na Wei people's face seems to be without beard, except eyebrows-but if they are synthetic (those with small eyes, each hand has 5 instead of 4 fingers). So I used the Clone stamp tool to remove the scum. You must press the "ALT" key on the keyboard to enlarge the selected source area, click Once, and then release and apply normally. Be sure that the source area you choose looks the most similar to the area you want to copy, and if it doesn't look good, try a different source.
Step 4
Now remove the ear! It's easy because I just smeared them with black and made them blend with the background. If you have long hair in your photo, you can use the Clone Stamp tool to hide your ears and copy them. However, if you have short hair this step can be very tricky, Na Wei people's ears higher than the human ear. In this case, I might use the Clone stamp tool again.
Now, you can draw the ear of the Na-wei people yourself, or like me--load the screenshot I found on the Internet. There are a lot of movie pictures you can find on the Internet. Save them to your computer, go to "file" and "Open ..." and select the image.
You can also download the ears that I have prepared.
Now select the Polygon Lasso tool in the tool window and create a mask around the imported ear. After that, either drag the picture to your file, or "edit", "copy" the Ear, and "paste" it into your image. It's now a new layer--you can see it in the Layers window. Now, place your loaded ear-you may need to resize it, click on the "Move Tool" and move it to the right place.
Step 5
If the face is positive, you just right click on the ear layer and select "Copy Layer". Then select "Flip horizontally" to move the ear to the right place. As you can see, the ear I'm loading is missing a corner, and I'm going to paint this section using the Clone Stamp tool and the brush tool set to "normal" (using the Eyedropper tool to select the color of the ear itself). A little difficult.
Step 6
Now, we need to enlarge our eyes. Usually you can try to do this because cruise is looking straight into the camera and the eyes must expand equally. First, copy the overall image and you have two identical versions. Then use the Polygon Lasso tool and choose Add Selection in the menu (so you can select several regions at the same time). Create two masks, each around two eyes, including eyelids and eyebrows. Click "Move Tool" on the toolbar and enlarge the selection until the eye is the size you want. Now click "Move Tool" and select "Apply" in the pop-up window. Now, copy and paste in the Edit menu. The eye should now be on the new layer. Copy the layer. Then use the Eraser tool to erase the left eye of the "eye layer" and the right eye of the other eye layer. Basically, this means that each eye is on a separate layer, though enlarged, but its proportions are still correct. Press CTRL to select two eye layers, and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the eyes up and down, and then select each individual eye to move it to the left, right, and then use the arrow keys again.
Step 7
Now, you can use the Eraser tool to erase the overlapping parts and boundary lines around your eyes. Doing so will expose the following layer, so do not delete too many.
Step 8
This is the hardest part--the nose! This may take quite a long time, so don't lose heart and try as much as possible.
Use the Rectangular marquee tool and select the nose and the area around it. Select "Filter" from the main menu and go "liquefaction ...". A new window opens, you might want to zoom in a little. Select the forward bending tool-brush density and brush pressure set to 100. Now, the Na Wei man's nose has formed. If you do something wrong, you can use the Rebuild tool. It may look a little strange, but it's nothing, click OK, it should look like the following figure.
Step 9
This is still quite difficult. Now, you need to use the "deepen" and "Dodge" tools. The range is set to midtones, exposure is set to 5%, and the nose continues to be carefully decorated. Try to figure out the source of the light on the photo. Because this step is very troublesome, you can proceed to the next step normally, and always return to modify the nose.
I use the "Dodge" tool, set to "midtones" and "High Light", highlighting the iris of the eye. Also, I dyed the tip of the nose pink, using the brush tool set to "color", this color can use the "eyedropper tool" from the ear sample.
Step 10
I continued to use the "deepen" tool--combining "midtones" and "Shadows"--to supplement the entire face. Compare the differences between images 9 and 10. You can choose not to do so. However, you may have noticed that I "liquefied" the nose a little ....
Step 11
I think my overall image is a bit too dark, go to the Layer window, at the bottom click the "Black and white" symbol named "Create new fill or adjust layer" and select "Levels ...". Now, a new window opens, press the figure set, and click OK. However, this option does not always improve the image, so you may want to try moving the slider adjustment. Or, if your picture is too light or too shallow, you can also use the slider to change it.
Step 12
In this mode, adorn the face, use the "deepen" tool--middle harmonic shadow, and "brush tool"-this time is round, its hardness of 50%, about 10% of the opacity, establish color depth, "mode" set to "normal." You need to try many times to get a good result.
Step 13
Now it's time to enlarge the iris of the eye! Basically we repeat step 6 here. So in every step, just apply them to the iris alone. After you've tuned in to your position, use the Eraser tool to erase the eyelids underneath the layer.
Finally I made some extra lighting effects, using the "Burn tool" setting to "shadow" and the Dodge tool setting to "High light". Compare the differences between images 12 and 13. I hope you will be satisfied with your result.
Step 14
Now let's compare the final effect with the original image
