the static mode of influence
There is a career with the development of the Internet has become more, called "Network promotion." It teaches you to use various means to increase the number of visits to your website. For example, do keyword optimization, generate tracking network hotspots of the latest content, log in a variety of yellow pages, exchange links everywhere, in large communities often speak, personality signature must include the URL, send ad mail ...
Many people flock to this practice, it has become an industry.
I have not tried this kind of promotion, the main reason is that my website is not commercial, it is not worth the trouble. But deep down, I never thought that the promotion was right.
Last week, I read Leo Babauta's article. He said explicitly, do not do "network promotion". I feel that his reasons are very thought provoking.
Don't use your creativity in these areas, it's totally wasteful. Your creativity should be used to create value.
Inaction
What you really need is not traffic, but influence.
Yelling at others doesn't get any influence. Keeping quiet is a better choice. (Instead of screaming, prefer quiet.)
If everyone else is shouting "Look at me", you keep quiet.
If everyone else is looking at the market, you have to focus on yourself.
If everyone else values sales and clicks, you value the content of the site.
If everyone else is soliciting visitors, you let them find their own door.
If someone else is trying to ask a visitor to subscribe to a newsletter, you won't be able to provide this feature.
If everyone else is advertised, don't talk about yourself.
If others are preoccupied with copyright, you will be giving your work in vain.
If everyone else is trying to set ambitious goals, keep a low profile and try to lower your expectations for the future.
The point here is not that you give up the competition, but that you use time and money for marketing campaigns to create real value.
Someone will find out about you. They will be surprised that you have done it carefully and well, but have never heard of it, so go and tell their friends. At this point, your visitor becomes your salesman, and your value is your biggest ad.
Keep quiet and make yourself valuable. In the long run, this is more effective than any marketing tool.
