PPPoE service name and maximum transmission unit

We have explained in detail the PPPoE server configuration for Windows XP. Here we will introduce other aspects. First, let's take a look at setting the PPPoE service name.

PPPoE service name

The Windows XP operating system provides great convenience for users. When trying to connect, the system automatically searches for the service name. Therefore, you do not need to manually set the PPPoE service name. This function is valid for most users. If you need to specify a specific service name, you need to perform the following operations:

Right-click the broadband connection and click Properties ).

On the General tab, enter the service name and click OK ).

Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU)

After explaining the content of the PPPoE service name, let's take a look at the knowledge of the largest transmission unit. The maximum transmission unit and MTU cannot be set in the connection attribute ). By default, PPPoE connections in Windows XP use a MTU size of 20 bytes smaller than the ip mtu of the LAN adapter that sends the PPPoE package. The 20 bytes are allocated to the PPPoE header 6 bytes), the maximum possible external PPP header 4 bytes), and the maximum possible external Multilink PPP header 4 bytes ), maximum PPP header 4 bytes for compression and encryption) and PPP header 2 bytes for identifying the actual sending packet ). If you want to reduce the number of MTU bytes, you can adjust it as follows:

Inform ISP to ask them to reduce MTU by adjusting the maximum receiving unit option and modifying the configuration of the access device. This is a good solution we recommend.

Alternatively, modify the MTU size of all non-VPN micro-ports by setting the values in the following registry on the computer running Windows XP:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services

Change \ NdisWan \ Parameters \ Protocols \ 0 \ ProtocolType to 0x0800.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services

\ NdisWan \ Parameters \ Protocols \ 0 \ PPPProtocolType is changed to 0x0021.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services

Change \ NdisWan \ Parameters \ Protocols \ 0 \ ProtocolMTU to the desired MTU size. PPPoE compares the value with the default value and uses a slightly smaller value (the default value of MTU of the LAN adapter is 20 bytes ).

We do not recommend the second solution because these modifications will affect the MTU used by all the micro ports except the built-in VPN micro ports.) compatibility with third-party PPPoE Products

Some third-party PPPoE software has some compatibility issues, including: WinPoET 2.1a and earlier versions, Enternet 300 1.34 and earlier versions, and RASPPPoE. If you cannot obtain the upgraded third-party components, you can use the PPPoE client that comes with Windows XP as a transitional solution to achieve Internet connection.

Here, I believe you have some knowledge about PPPoE configuration, PPPoE service name, and the concept of the maximum transmission unit in Windows XP. I hope this article will give you some reference.
