PS Production of Paisley (Peislay) patterns

Paisley (Peislay) is a kind of gorgeous style, shaped like water droplets, which is composed mostly of round or curved lines. Its name comes from a small textile town in western Scotland, a town known for its large production of the decorative shawl. Paisley pattern is exquisite, diverse, complex, gorgeous, full of the classical atmosphere.

This wonderful pattern originated in ancient Babylon and flourished in Persia and India. The fashion world uses it as an element of bohemian sentiment. Its pattern is said to come from the Hindu "Tree of Life"-the banyan leaf or the leaf of the sea date. Others have found its shadow from mangoes, sliced figs and armandicola.

What we're going to learn today is how to use the look, scatter brushes, and recolor artwork in AI software to create this kind of complex and diverse beautiful pattern.

A. Create a scatter brush

First, we're going to create a scatter brush. As mentioned before, the Paisley pattern is mainly made up of circles and curves, so here we use the circle as the basic style of creating a scatter brush.

Create a new 800600px file in AI and draw a 1010px circle. Round fill black, remove stroke.

Select the black circle, open the Brush tool panel, and create a new scatter brush in the panel.

The option panel for the scatter brush is set to the default value, changed to Paisley1, adjusts the coloring method to "tonal", rotates relative to "path", and clicks confirm. The options here are the adjustment settings for the style of the elements of the scatter brush.

After clicking Confirm, the first scatter brush is finished. Select the scatter brush and use the brush tool on the canvas to outline the pattern you want. Set the stroke color to change the color.

After attempting the creation of the first scatter brush, we then proceed to the second scatter brush, which is very simple to make and also uses a circular pattern, but this time we are using a hollow shape.

Draw a circle of ten * 10px. Round stroke black, stroke size 1px, remove padding. Follow the steps above to create a new scatter brush, renamed Paisley2, and the scatter brush's panel setting is the same as a solid circle.

Once you've learned the simplest way to create a scatter brush, let's challenge a slightly more difficult scatter brush. Let's first draw a 10*5px oval and then draw a solid smaller ellipse, merge the two ellipses into a pattern, copy the pattern, and rotate it upside down vertically.

Go to the Setup Panel of the new scatter brush and set the values accordingly. The other parts are the same as the previous steps, and only the spacing becomes 30%. The reason is very simple, our basic pattern is a rectangular pattern, it's long far larger than its width, such patterns need to set the spacing, to shorten the spacing to allow it to achieve a dense arrangement.

Second, color matching

Before making the pattern creation, please remember to make the color palette selection first. If in the creation process again to color, it is not conducive to the creation of their own play. In this open Swatches panel, in the panel to create a new color group, I choose Purple as the main color, in addition to the green and it complementary, to create a gorgeous effect of color bump.

Third, create patterns

Now, to create our patterns on the canvas, let's first draw the basic pattern of the patterns: a droplet shape.

At this point, we started to set the appearance of this droplet shape, which is quite an interesting process. Before you make the appearance settings, make sure you have mastered the basic features such as add new fill, add new stroke, and copy appearance in the Appearance panel. Mastering them is essential to the design of a pattern, and you can use these features to make changes in the appearance of the graphic, including color, shape, size, and so on. You can also constantly modify the appearance, add new look and so on.

When the graphic is selected, open the Appearance panel, change the stroke to green 3px in the Panel, and adjust snap strokes to align inside the stroke.

To add a new stroke, you should note in the new stroke's appearance settings:

1 Your stroke type is no longer a line, a pattern but just a paislay3 scatter brush, where there is no brush selection in the panel, you need to open the Brush panel to click the Paislay3 brush.

2 stroke size and other attributes can be opened with the underlined strokes two words into the property panel, here, the stroke size to 1.5px, just can show half of the scatter brush, that is, a decorative oval water droplets.

3 The appearance of the various appearances in the panel is similar to the concept of the layer, which is the appearance of the above occlusion. For example, I've just set a 3px green stroke, which is placed above the purple fill, and the next addition of the scatter brush stroke is placed at the bottom, below the purple fill, so that it looks as if the two strokes are combined.

Let's add some more complex patterns to this pattern, which is similar to cooking with salt, MSG and other seasonings. There is no objective law that must be done, but just like learning to cook, the amount and collocation of seasonings in a dish can win everyone's appetite, and you can build your own "inventory" by constantly trying and summarizing it. Here, I'll show you how I do it, and you can do it in a different way to make your pattern.

Adds a new fill, and the fill color is pink in the Swatch. Add a new effect to the new fill, click "Path > Displacement path", in the displacement path of the property panel "displacement" in the " -15px", this displacement value if it is 0, the path to keep the original position unchanged, as a negative value, the path will be narrowed, conversely, if the positive, the path will expand.

Adds a new stroke to the pink fill, you can copy the old 3px line stroke, and then place the copied stroke above the pink fill. Also adds a new effect to the stroke, and the displacement path -15px.

Add a new stroke, you can copy the old 1.5px Paisley3 stroke, and then place the copied stroke underneath the pink fill, turning the stroke into paisley1 and changing the color to another green. Add new effect, displacement path -17px.

Do you know how to use the appearance one or two? Then add new fills and new strokes to the graphic, fill it with purple, stroke green, and the displacement path -30px.

Next, let's add another new effect to the graphic. First copy the purple fill appearance of the previous step, and then change the copied appearance fill to green to add a new effect, "styling > Smearing." Set in the Smudge option. At this time, your settings and I may be different, do not need to adhere to the specific number, as long as the final adjustment to achieve the following figure shown in the results can be.

At this time, our paisley pattern is done. When the graphic is selected, click Add New Style and save as Paisley new style. At this point, you can use this style to make thousands of patterns.

Iv. Re-coloring

Select the graphic, click the Recolor Artwork button above the toolbar to open the Recolor artwork panel. The various settings in the panel are the scenarios for the new coloring artwork. In this case, you can choose the coloring in the coordination rules, such as the synthetic color I choose here, the color of the pattern will change with the instant.

You can also click the "Limit color group to a color in a color board" to open the appropriate color swatch and select the appropriate coordination rule. For example, I choose the synthetic color of the textile here, and the pattern color changes as follows.

When you are satisfied with your new color, you can choose to save the pattern for later use.

There is also a manual change in the color of the pattern, in the Recolor artwork panel select "Edit", enter the editing options will see a palette, the palette allows you to manually select a color scheme, you will drag the color picker in the palette to change the bottom of the HSB slider value, and the pattern will immediately show your color results. You can also change by moving the HSB slider. Manual adjustment is the best choice when you are confident in your color-matching ability.
