Pull hate! New York City free WiFi project officially started

According to foreign media Fortune, on the second day of the U.S. time, New York officially launched the free WiFi coverage of the entire New York City project. It is reported that the project requires 7500 access points, of which the first two access points are officially set up, free WiFi access is available at the end of this month.

The first two access points are located at the junction of 3rd Avenue, 15th Street, and 17th Street. The signal coverage radius of each access point is about 120 meters and the network speed is 1 Gbps, the report said. The two locations were originally placed in a public phone booth.

In addition to free WiFi, these access points also provide USB charging devices for users who need to temporarily charge their mobile phones. In addition, these Wi-Fi access points also have a touch screen that can be used to call video phones, and two advertisements occupy the video-this is the source of income for free WiFi projects.

The free WiFi project in the city is called LinkNYC (connected to New York). Its initiators include four companies: chip company Qualcomm, chip design company Comark, advertising company Titan, and the company Control Group responsible for strategy. Later, Titan and Control Group merged into an Intersection, and Google was the dominant force behind the merger and investors. Now LinkNYC is mainly implemented by Intersection.

Compared to self-driving cars, free WiFi in the city does not sound very exciting, but it can be seen as a Google attempt to enter the offline advertising field. Intersection plans to earn $0.5 billion in revenue over the next 12 years through the presentation ads of these access points.

In addition, it is not easy to install 7500 Wi-Fi access points in cities like New York, and it takes 8 years to fully implement the LinkNYC plan. However, in the next 15 months, LinkNYC will set up 500 access points, which seems more practical.
