While logic and data are important for technical presentations, the right story is essential.

after a week of listening to the speech, the audience may forget most of the content. But a proper story will make people remember. The human brain has a deeper impression of the story than logic and data. stories often lead to feelings and associations. Emotions can affect decisions and behavior.

In technology-focused speeches, the audience's understanding of technology can vary greatly, and if too much attention is paid to technical details, it is likely to make some listeners drowsy. So how can the speaker communicate the message effectively? Try to tell a story in a way.

There are differences in the way information is recognized, some people emphasize logical data, some people are susceptible to emotional infection, some people focus on the overall business interests. In particular, business decision makers are more concerned about the business value behind technology. So technical speakers need to have a balanced view of the overall content of the speech so that the majority of listeners can effectively influence.

I personally like to start with a storytelling approach. Because they are familiar with their own experience, easy to ease their own tension, while effectively bringing the audience into a scene. The beginning of a successful speech is the most important. Smartphones and social networks have greatly weakened people's focus. If the audience is not captured in the first few minutes, then the basic whole speech will not be counted on.

The question that the audience cares about is: What do you talk about and I have a hair relationship? Why should I listen to you? Why is it now?

By telling stories, you can make the audience feel involved, and it's possible that they have similar experiences. If you can answer the above three questions in the story, that's better. The audience may not be cold on the technology itself, but the scene of the story may make people realize that there are problems in my environment, or that there is a need for improvement, to be interested in the following technical content.

A good story may have the following elements:

Purpose Clear

What are the issues that need to be addressed in technical presentations?

The story itself is a service for the information that is conveyed, be clear about what you want to achieve. After a clear purpose, you can add skeletons and content to your story.

Structure and plot

The beginning and the cushion : It is best to be empathetic. According to the background of the audience, you can choose the scene that people easily agree with. Clear and concise with the audience into the scene, to avoid the details of irrelevant themes.  It's better to have a picture, like this: On a fine afternoon, I look at the distance from the office on The high-rise floor. For example, when it comes to application performance that does not meet the needs of the user, imagine a scenario where an emergency call is received from an office, which many people may have encountered.

Main narrative: This is the part of contradiction and conflict rendering. When describing negative emotions, it's better to say "I'm worried" than "I was worried about my throat being dry, my heart beating faster, and even my breathing was rushing up."

Is there a sudden change in the moment, the problem suddenly turned to a turnaround?

Outcome: This is the key to fastening the goal. What's the solution to the problem? What are the key messages the audience gets?

Can consciously use the space to help the transition of the story. For example, walking to the right hand side can hint at what happened in the past and go to the left to hint at what is or will happen.

Role Playing

This is an important part of keeping the story alive. Try to use dialogue to explain the background and character of the story.

If only descriptive language is used, there is a lack of sense of locality and realism. For example: He was dissatisfied with the result and did not listen to the explanation. Express your emotions loudly. It's all about descriptive language, not a story. It is better to imitate the character's posture and tone of speech.

Characterization can be characterized by image and sound. Of course, according to the theme and audience background, the degree of certainty is very important. Can not appear to be dried, and can not perform too heavy marks.

Contrast

When the audience is not aware of the technology, the appropriate contrast can be more effective. For example, when it comes to accelerating applications by reducing requests for storage, I would say this: In the rush hour of crowded roads, if we all go to the high-speed subway train, the road on the horse is greatly reduced, although the road is not widened, but the traffic will be much faster than congestion.

Your own story.

the story of personal experience is more persuasive and does not always have to play a successful role. Brene Brown in the famous TED speech "Power of Vulnerability" in the beginning of his almost collapsed experience, humor relaxed, It is also easy to create a sense of identity.

Be brave and tell your own story!
