VirtualBox integrates many features that you may never have used, even if you often use it to run virtual machines. VMware maintains many of its best features in its paid edition, but all of VirtualBox's features are completely free.

In virtual machines, many features require a supplemental installation of the customer. It's a good thing to install a customer supplemental installation package that will speed up your virtual machine.

Snapshot

VirtualBox can create snapshots to save the state of a virtual machine. You can revert to the state at any time when you saved the snapshot. Snapshots are similar to keeping a virtual machine in a saved state, and you can have multiple saved states that can be restored at any time.

To create a snapshot, when the VM is running, click menu, select Take snapshot or use the snapshot panel, so you can save the snapshot on the interface later.

Snapshots are especially useful if you want to make some changes to the virtual machine and then delete the changes. For example, if you use a virtual machine to test the software, you can create a snapshot of a clean Windows system and then install the software to try it out. When you are done, you can restore the original snapshot and all the software traces will be deleted. You do not need to reinstall your operating system or manually back up the files in the virtual machine.

Seamless mode

Seamless mode allows you to break the window limits and place the operating system windows in your virtual machine on the desktop of your host operating system. For example, if you use VirtualBox to run an important Windows program on your Linux desktop, you can use seamless mode to have Windows programs appear on your Linux desktop.

To use this feature, install the VirtualBox Customer Supplement package on the virtual machine, select the View menu, and click Switch to Seamless.

3D Support

The VirtualBox supports basic 3D graphics. You have to manually turn it on, this driver is not installed by default, and you must manually enable these settings in the Virtual Machine Settings window when you have finished installing the customer supplement package.

3D Support does not support you playing the latest 3D games, but it supports you in the virtual machine to enable Windows Aero Desktop effects and play the 3D games that are not too high.

USB Device

You can connect the USB device to your computer and extend it to your virtual machine as if they were directly connected. This feature can be used by various other devices on the USB device. As soon as you enable USB support in the Virtual Machine Settings window, you can click on the "Devices" tab, point to the USB device, and select the USB device you want to connect to.

Shared folders

VirtualBox allows you to set "Shared Folders" that are accessible to both the main operating system and the virtual machine operating system. VirtualBox essentially puts a folder in the host operating system, and then uses file sharing to make it accessible in the virtual machine. Configure the shared folder in the Virtual Machine Settings window and then access or mount it as if it were a normal network share.

Share clipboard and drag and drop

Copy, paste, and drag-and-drop are not available by default between the virtual machine system and the host system. However, VirtualBox allows you to share the Clipboard between the virtual machine system and the primary system to make the copy and paste available. You can also use drag and drop to easily move files back and forth. These features reduce the inconvenience of using software in virtual machines, but they are disabled by default.

Cloning a virtual machine

VirtualBox allows you to clone a virtual machine and create a copy of the virtual machine. If you want to manually copy and paste the file implementation you will experience problems because the virtual machine and its virtual disks use the same identification number. When you replicate a virtual machine, VirtualBox will make sure that they do not conflict with each other.

Port forwarding

Virtual machines are often isolated from the network. If you want to run the server software in the virtual machine, you may want to set up port forwarding so that the server can be accessed from outside the virtual machine. You can find this option in the "Advanced Settings"-"Network Settings" window.

You can also choose a virtual machine to connect directly to the network instead of using NAT, but using NAT and port forwarding can be a better way to allow only specific ports to pass without changing your network settings too much.

Importing and exporting virtual appliances

Appliances is a virtual machine that contains preinstalled systems. You can create your own appliances or download the OVF format appliances import to VirtualBox. This is especially useful for free distribution of Linux virtual machines and other systems, and you can create your own appliances and distribute them to your organization.

Remote Display

VirtualBox allows you to enable remote display of virtual machines, allowing you to run a server without a host or other remote system and access it from another computer. VirtualBox uses "VRDP" to implement this feature, which is backwards compatible with the Microsoft RDP protocol. This means that you can remotely access your virtual machine on Windows or any other RDP browser without requiring any VirtualBox to specify the software.

You can also add a virtual disk to the VirtualBox. VirtualBox does not have this setting on the interface, you need to use the Vboxmanage command to replace the implementation.
