Remote wake-up Technology (Wol,wake-on-lan), can be implemented remotely through the LAN, regardless of how far the computer is accessed from us, what position, as long as in the same LAN, can be activated at any time.

Hardware requirements for remote wake-up

Can be remotely awakened computer hardware has a certain requirements, mainly in the network card, motherboard and power supply.

1. Network card

Can realize remote wake-up, one of the most important part is to support WOL network card. My company's TF-3239 is to support WOL. The network card for the remotely awakened computer must support WOL, and the NIC used to wake the other computer does not have to support WOL. In addition, when multiple network adapters are installed on a computer, only one of them is set to be remotely awakened.

2. Motherboard

The motherboard must also support remote wake-up, which can be confirmed by looking at the "Wake on LAN" item in the CMOS power Management Setup menu. In addition, motherboards that support remote wake-up typically have a dedicated 3-pin socket to power the NIC (PCI2.1 standard). Since the current motherboard typically supports the PCI 2.2 standard, the +3.3V standby power supply can be provided directly through the PCI slot to the NIC, even if the Wol power cord is not connected to remote wake-up, it may no longer provide a 3-pin socket. The motherboard supports the PCI2.2 standard and can be confirmed by looking at the "Wake on PCI Card" item in the CMOS power Management Setup menu.

3. Power supply

To achieve remote wake-up, the computer must be installed with the ATX 2.01 standard ATX power supply, +5v standby current should be at least 600mA.

Preparation before remote wake-up implementation

The remote wake-up function of a computer does not mean that it is capable of remote wake-up, and the hardware must be connected and set up as necessary before it can be implemented.

1.CMOS and NIC Settings

Boot the computer into the CMOS parameter settings. Select the Power Management settings Management Setup menu to set the "Wake up on LAN" and "Wake on PCI card" entries to "enable" to enable remote wake-up for the computer. You also need to set the "Wake-on-lan" feature on the TF-3239 network card to Enable.

2. Hardware connection

Install the TF-3239 NIC in the PCI slot of your computer, and then plug the WOL cable into the network card and the motherboard's 3-cell socket, connecting the NIC to the computer's motherboard. If the computer board supports the PCI 2.2 standard, simply turn on the "Wake on PCI card" feature and do not need to use the WOL cable connection. Start the computer, install the NIC driver, and make the necessary network settings, specifying the IP address parameters.

3. Set User login automatically

When you wake a remote computer, you must be able to log on automatically, as follows: If the remote computer is configured for use by more than one user (the next step if you are a single user), double-click the User icon in Control Panel to delete all users in the dialog box. Restart your computer and click OK when the logon dialog box is displayed without entering a password. Open the Network option in Control Panel and select Microsoft Friendly logon or Windows logon for primary network logon. Select Microsoft Network Users and click the Properties button to cancel the "Log on to Windows NT domain" check box in the pop-up dialog box. Open the Password item in Control Panel, select the User Profiles tab in the Password Properties dialog box that appears, select the first item, "All users on this computer use the same preferences and desktop configuration," and click OK to restart the computer. After these steps, the remote computer does not appear in the login interface when it starts up.

4. Test the MAC address of the network card

You can know the MAC address of a network card by running Winipcfg.exe (WIN95) or Ipconfig.exe (WIN98) on your computer.

Winipcfg

Click Start/Run, type "Winipcfg" and enter, and eject the IP configuration window. Select PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter in the Drop-down list, and the text that appears in the adapter address bar is the MAC address of the network adapter.

Ipconfig

At the DOS prompt, run the ipconfig command with the "all" parameter, or display the MAC address of the NIC. The command format is as follows: Ipconfig/all

Implementation of remote Wake-up

Remote wake-up requires the use of the appropriate software to achieve. TF-3239 needs to use AMD's Magic packet as a remote wake-up packet. When you wake a computer remotely, run the Magic_pkt.exe program, and the main window appears. Select "Run power Management Test" and select "Master Machine" in the dialog box that pops up, and continue to select "Magic Packet" or "Wakeup Frame" in the dialog box, Software prompts "Input Ethernet Address to Match Node ID of Target Machine "(Destination network card MAC address) in order to wake up the computer network card MAC addresses, send a carriage return. The remote computer starts automatically and can be manipulated after a few moments.

Troubleshoot the problem

1. The solution that the computer does not start correctly after enabling the remote wake function of the network card:
Remove the 3-pin remote wake line from the computer's motherboard;
Restart the computer, run the configuration program to set up the network card;
Turn off the computer and reconnect the 3-pin remote wake line;
Restart your computer.

2. Resolution of the computer that cannot be awakened when a remote wake-up signal is sent:
Check whether the computer and network card meet the basic requirements of remote wake-up;
Check the computer for the correct CMOS settings for remote wake-up;
Remove the computer cover and check that the 3-pin remote wake-up connection is correct and reliable;
Run the configuration program, check the network card parameter settings are appropriate;
Reseat the computer by inserting a WOL network card and a 3-pin remote wake-up cable that is known to have no problem.
