Using Photoshop to pull the map, both convenient and good effect. Here I'm going to write a concise tutorial on how to figure out the sample shots, and also want to help someone like the need for hair-gouging.
1, the use of the channel mask in this example method used to deal with portrait of slender hair and animal hair, the effect is extremely powerful. In fact, there are many ways to pull the map (this is Photoshop flexible, powerful performance), you reader can also try to use other methods to achieve better results.
2, this case is for the Lepidoptera specimen. This method can also be used for reference in samples of other taxa.
First, the image preparation
In fact, the quality of the original image to pull the effect of the map is very high quality of the original image can be a lot of worry-digging. Therefore, we do not think that pull the map is omnipotent, do not pay attention to the quality of the original, but should be in the shooting process of specimen as far as possible to achieve perfection:
1, do not appear running Coke, jitter and so on. The image should be as clear as possible.
2, play light evenly, the specimen is best not to appear shadow.
3, the background color uniformity, no texture, as far as possible compared with the specimen strong.
Second, drawing process
All right, we're going to start digging now! Let's take a look at the specimen we're trying to pick up:
Original artwork: Loxerebia
This specimen is a good shot, the background also said in the past, that is, there are two of lines in the middle, and then pull up the map to spend time to erase them. So, when we take photos, we must deal with the background well.
Channel panel: Creating a copy of the channel
Next, we open the channel panel and we'll see 4 channels that already exist: RGB, red, green, and blue. With the naked eye, select a channel that is the strongest contrast to the background (in this case, the blue channel), click the channel down to the "new channel" button and release the mouse, and then we get a new channel-"Blue-copy":
New channel "Blue-copy"
Next, click "Blue-Copy" to enter the channel. A Black-and-white blue channel image is displayed in the canvas. At this point, "ctrl+l" opens the Color Scale tab.
Levels tab
Move the slider in the left circle slowly to the right, and the slider in the right circle moves slowly to the left (remember, slowly adjust it) and observe the image--as the slider moves, the specimen's brightness darkens and the background brightness lightens.
Adjust the process to note the edge: The image edge has reached the ideal state, you can stop the adjustment
In the adjustment process, but also "Ctrl +" zoom in to see the edge of the specimen, and constantly adjust, making the specimen most of the edge of the inside become black, the outside become pure white.
Final effect
At this point, you can stop the adjustment, click the "OK" button.
Next, we will use the eraser and brush tools to paint the background white, the specimen painted black inside, not near the edge.
The Brush tool and Eraser tool in the toolbar: click to use
The final effect is as follows:
Final effect
At this time, the specimen edge and some dark background adhesion, do not rush to deal with OH. "Ctrl+i", the image "reversed", the edge of the dark background adhesion is very clear display.
After the "reversed phase", the edge of the adhesion of the background is clearly visible
We use the Lasso tool, select the edge of a connected adhesion background, "ctrl+l" Open the Color Level tab. Slide the left slider gently to the left and observe the image.
Select Edge Adhesion background
When the white color block in the image is separated from the edge and the black color block is separated, click the OK button. Use a brush to black the remaining white patches in the background. This process is repeated several times, with a small number of principles, until all the edges are processed.
Adjust the levels to separate the adhesion background from the edges (do not continue to adjust, then apply the brush)
Final effect
The final effect is as shown above.
Open the Layers panel. Click Background Layer-click the new Layer Mask button below the panel:
The background layer changes to layer 0 and the new layer mask.
Back to the channel panel, as shown below:
New Layer 0-mask in Channel panel
Copy the processed images in the blue-copy channel to layer 0-mask, and the effect is as follows:
Effects after adding a layer mask
Go back to the layer mask. Click "Layer 0" to finish the drawing, and the effect is as follows:
Back to the effect of the layer
Free to add white background, as well as other color background, the effect is as follows:

After amplification, the edge effect is still more satisfactory:

Third, PostScript
Through this simple example, do we master the essentials of drawing?
