Scientists use Google Earth to develop a traffic accident prediction system

A virtual electronic map of highways in Ohio uses colors to mark the risk factor of a crash. "Green indicates that the probability of a crash is very small. Yellow indicates that the probability of a crash is moderate. Red indicates that a collision of a vehicle is very likely to occur in this region during this time period ." Even high-tech devices such as satellites that monitor highway conditions in real time do not have the ability to predict the possibility of a traffic accident for a specific time period or region. However, at Google's famous network software Google Earth, researchers at Ohio State University used computer modeling software to make unknown prophets no longer legends in mythical stories.

People who often drive out often have this experience. When the road conditions are slightly bad, they are very careful when driving, and the road is safe. However, on the smooth Kangzhuang Avenue, drivers often relax their vigilance because they are light-hearted, which can easily cause off-peak disasters. Therefore, it is imperative to estimate the probability of a traffic accident in different regions and time periods to trigger alarms for people driving.
"Our model software has been able to tell you accurately that a specific type of vehicle collision accident is very likely to occur in this region during this time period ." Christopher Holloman, deputy director of the data consulting service center of the Department of Statistics at Ohio State University, is the main director of the entire software development project, he said, "Therefore, the main function of the software is to make appropriate predictions and warnings for traffic accidents during high-risk periods." The software science and technology project team at Ohio State University developed a set of software by collecting previous traffic accident data and performing computer data processing. Predict the probability of a traffic accident in a specific time period and road section, and mark it on an electronic map with three colors: red, yellow, and green.
The original intention of developing the prediction model is to create a professional tool for the highway patrol team in Ohio to prepare police forces in advance when highway traffic accidents occur frequently. Scientists obtained the entire Ohio highway traffic table from the patrol team over the past five years. The details of the traffic accident records include the time, location, weather conditions, and various human factors, such as whether the driver is driving after drinking or speeding. On this basis, the researchers used the prototype of the SAS (Statistics Analysis System) software to generate a traffic accident prediction System that appears on Google Earth. Researchers have also brainstormed how ordinary Internet users can use Google Earth to get the traffic information. To this end, they even use a network browsing format different from the traditional HTML-KML. According to Christopher holuman, they adopt this brand new network text format because it can perform image positioning on realistic terrain more smoothly and clearly with color blocks than HTML. However, due to data limitations, the predictions currently are only available in Ohio.
