SCVMM R2 Operations Management eight: adding trusted Hyper-V hosts and clusters

When SCVMM is created, we need to add the Hyper-V host to SCVMM to facilitate our management.

In this experiment, we'll show you how to add an existing Hyper-V host and a Hyper-V host cluster to VMM:

There are several main types of hosts that are added to the cluster:

1. A Windows Server computer or a Windows Server failover cluster in an active Directory domain that is trusted by the SCVMM Management Server.

2. Windows Server computers or failover clusters in Active Directory domains that are not trusted by the SCVMM Management Server

3. Windows Server computers in a perimeter network or Workgroup (standalone computers only)

4. Physical computers that do not have an operating system installed

In the following blog will be introduced in the above mentioned these types of hosts, first of all, today we introduce the first: the SCVMM Management Server trusted by the Windows Server computer in an active Directory domain or Windows Server Failover clustering.

The prerequisite condition needs to be met when adding trusted hosts and clusters:

1. Ensure that a stand-alone server or failover cluster is a member of an Active Directory domain that has a two-way trust associated with the domain of the VMM Management Server.

2. The server you want to add must support hyper-V.

3. If you are adding a VMM Management Server as a managed Hyper-V host, you need to ensure that the hyper-V role is enabled on the VMM Management Server before you add the computer.

To add a trusted Hyper-V host or host cluster

1. Open the Construction workspace:

3. On the Home tab, in the Add Group, click Add Resource, and then click Hyper-V hosts and clusters.

4. On the Resource Location page, click Windows Server computers in trusted Active Directory domains, and then click Next.

5. On the Credentials page, enter the credentials for a domain account that has administrative rights on all hosts that you want to add, where you can use the existing run as account, either by creating a good run as account or by using manual input credentials, where I manually enter the credentials and then click Next.

6. On the Discovery Scope page, do any of the following:

1. Click Specify Windows Server computers by name. In the Computer Name box, enter the computer you want to add, one row for each computer name or IP address. If you are adding a Hyper-V host cluster, you can specify the cluster name or IP address, or the name or IP address of any cluster node.

2. Click Specify Active Directory queries to search for Windows Server computers. Then, enter the Active Directory query in the Type AD query box, or click Generate AD query to create the query.

Here I use "specify Active Directory queries to search Windows Server Computers" and then click "Generate AD Query" and click Next:

7. On the Target Resources page, select the check box next to each computer that you want to add, and then click Next. For example, select the check box next to Vmm-02.corp.com, and then click Next.

If the Hyper-V role is not enabled on the selected server, you will receive a message that VMM will install the Hyper-V role and restart the server. Click OK to continue.

8. On the Host Settings page, do the following:

1. In the Host group list, click the host group for which you want to assign a master or host cluster.

2. If the host is already associated with another VMM Management Server, select the re-associate this host with this VMM environment check box.

3. If you are adding a standalone host, in the Add the following path box, enter the path on the host where you want to store the virtual machine files that are deployed on the host, and then click Add. Repeat this step if you want to add multiple paths. Note the following behavior:

If you leave this box blank, the default path,%systemdrive%\programdata\microsoft\windows\hyper-v, is used. Note that it is best not to add the default path on the drive where the operating system files are located.

If you specify a path that does not exist, the path is created automatically.

9. Confirm the settings on the summary page, and then click Finish

When you click Finish, the Jobs dialog box appears to display the job status. 10. To verify that you have successfully added a host or host cluster, in the Fabric pane, expand the host group in which you want to add hosts or host clusters, click a host or host cluster, and then verify that the host status is normal in the hosts pane.
