In the past two years, Dropbox and other cloud storage services quickly red, the Giants have launched their own cloud storage services (Apple's ICloud, Microsoft's SkyDrive, Google's forthcoming GDrive), domestic also have similar services (Jinshan network disk, kangaroo plate, nut cloud, etc.). Users only need to store their own files to these cloud storage space, from their own desktop, mobile phones, tablets and other devices anytime and anywhere access to their own files, if the user in one place to update files, other places will automatically sync.

Challenge the traditional "Sync network", represented by Dropbox, Seafile a private cloud service built with Distributed file synchronization technology #36 Krypton Open Day #

Traditional "Sync Network" products, represented by Dropbox, use "centralized" file storage and synchronization solutions with some drawbacks and risks (see below). Domestic start-up companies
Seafile uses "Distributed file synchronization Technology" to achieve "decentralized" synchronization services, so that users do not need to rely on a specific server to achieve file synchronization and sharing. Seafile's distributed technology has several advantages over traditional "synchronous network" products:

1) Seafile provides both client and server-side software
Free download, individual or company can set up their own private file synchronization service. At the same time, Seafile enables users to use multiple simultaneous servers simultaneously and to switch between different servers. For example, users can use the company server to synchronize work files, personal servers and friends to share private files, the two do not interfere, privacy can also be guaranteed.

2) Seafile has higher data reliability. Seafile retains all the historical versions of each synced file on the user's local computer (notebook, desktop). This way, even if the data on the server is lost, a historical version of the file can be found locally, and the data can be migrated to the new server. In contrast, Dropbox-like web drives only save the file history on the server, and once the server data is lost, it's hopeless. And Seafile can turn data autonomy back to the user.

3) Seafile has a stronger privacy. The user can set the data encryption password separately for each synchronized directory, and before uploading the data to the server, Seafile will first encrypt the data using the password given by the user. This password is not uploaded to the server, which means that even the server's administrator cannot peek at your private data. By contrast, other network products simply encrypt the passwords they generate for you, which are stored on their servers, making it difficult to completely avoid data leaks due to third-party causes (the recent CSDN leaks have added to the concern).

In addition, Seafile supports the multi-dir-sync mode, as well as the non-server LAN-to-Peer sync feature, which has not yet been formally released.

Of course, as with any system, Seafile has some limitations: because Seafile retains a historical version of the file on the user's computer, it consumes additional storage space. Therefore, Seafile is not suitable for synchronizing oversized files (such as movies), but is better suited for applications such as working together and creating a private picture library.

On the market side, Pan Lingtao and Jiaqiang, co-founder of Seafile, said Seafile's vision was to create its own private file synchronization service for small and medium-sized businesses and private groups. "For businesses, the reliability and privacy of data is an important criterion for choosing a file synchronization service. We believe that Seafile is more able to meet the needs of enterprises in these two aspects than the existing network disk products. Some enterprises can install Seafile on their own servers for free, while most SMEs will be able to purchase the Seafile server hosting services we provide. ”
