Set the route function of the ADSL Modem

At the end of the year ago, I joined my neighbors and installed ADSL in partnership. My computer was used as the Internet host and connected to the telephone line through a dedicated ADSL Modem, in this way, virtual dial-up is used to achieve the most affordable and simple way to access the Internet, while nearby neighbors use the hub network switch device with the proxy server software, to connect their computer with the author's computer into a LAN, and finally share the author's ADSL to access the Internet. However, this Internet sharing method has encountered many drawbacks over time. The most obvious drawback is that, once my computer is not started, all the computers in my neighbor's house cannot connect to the Internet; if the network is to be connected for a long time, it is required that the computer of the author's home, as a proxy server, be started on. Obviously, this requirement is very difficult to implement. Is there a way for neighbors to access the INTERNET through the shared ADSL when the proxy server is not started or the author does not want to access the INTERNET?

Yes. You only need to use the ADSL Modem with the routing function to solve this problem! As long as the communication department in which you install ADSL has server support and the ADSL Modem with the routing function is used, computers in neighboring homes can access the INTERNET without interference from other computers or hosts. All computers that access the INTERNET through the ADSL Modem with the routing function become independent hosts, their status has nothing to do with the status of any other host.

In this case, the ADSL Modem used by the author two years ago belongs to the old type and does not have the so-called routing function. This function only appears in the new ADSL Modem device. Do I have to replace the ADSL Modem device to solve the problem? In fact, you can upgrade the early ADSL Modem to provide the routing function, so you do not need to invest in it again. However, not all ADSL Modem devices support "soft upgrade". For example, USB interface devices cannot be upgraded, only devices with RJ45 interfaces connected to NICs can be correctly upgraded.

To upgrade an ADSL Modem device, you can change the firmware of the internal data set on the device, change its running mode to the routing working mode, and then refresh and save the data, you can complete the upgrade task. Because different manufacturers of ADSL Modem devices provide different upgrade points, the upgrade methods are also different. The author can only summarize the General upgrade steps, for device upgrades from different manufacturers, refer to the specific product upgrade instructions:

1. Check whether the nameplate number at the bottom of your ADSL Modem is consistent with that on the manufacturer's website. After confirming that your device can be upgraded, you can download the firmware that matches your product from the corresponding website for upgrade;

2. Modify the IP address of the NIC connected to the Modem, set it to 168.0.0.1, and set the subnet mask of the NIC to 255.255.255.0;

3. Create a simple FTP server and set the network IP address of the FTP server to 168.0.0.1. Start the anonymous user name, set the password to null, and set the folder where the firmware has been downloaded to the root folder accessed by the user;

4. Open the start dialog box and enter telnet 168.0.0.1. Then, you can enter the FTP Username, password, and firmware file name set earlier on the logon page; when the screen shows whether to update the firmware, you can answer "Yes"; after confirmation, the Modem will be restarted in a short time;

5. Return to the run box and run the telnet 168.0.0.1 command again to log on to the Modem. On the logon prompt page, run the show command to view the status information of the current Modem; if the new model mark of the model Modem appears on the display screen, it indicates that the firmware content in the Modem has been successfully upgraded;

6. By now, all the ADSL Modem devices used already have the routing function, instead of the previous pure Modem; to manage this simple "Router", you only need to open IE and enter http: // 168.0.0.1 in the address bar of the browser, you can open a WEB page dedicated to Routing Management;

7. On this page, you can set the working mode of the ADSL Modem device to "Router", restart the ADSL Modem device, and then go to the WEB page of the routing management function again, enter your ADSL user name and password, and then select the "PPPoE" connection method. After setting all relevant parameters, You can unplug the Modem power cord and connect it again, so that the Modem can be started again;

8. Return to the computer system directly connected to the ADSL Modem device, right-click the network neighbor icon on the desktop, and execute the "attribute" command from the shortcut menu, in the network attribute parameter Settings dialog box that appears later, select "TCP/IP protocol" and click "properties" in the corresponding interface. On the settings page that appears, set the IP address of the Local Computer to automatic acquisition, set the gateway address to 168.0.0.1, and then set the corresponding DNS server to the IP address of the corresponding ISP's DNS server;

9. After completing all the above work, all computers connected to the Internet can access the network without interference from other computers. However, what I want to declare at the end is that upgrading the ADSL Modem is a highly technical task. If you are not careful, the ADSL Modem device may not work properly, therefore, please think twice before you start!
