Once you have carefully built your own site, you should publish it. Submitting your Web site to search engines, directories, and related sites is the key to success. If you promote your site in the wrong way, you actually reduce rather than increase the amount of traffic. There are 10 things that you should never do.

1. Do not send junk mail

This is the key rule of network etiquette. A large number of unsolicited emails can be tolerated wherever and for anyone. There are hundreds of people who try to sell you databases and software to send spam, but don't trust them. Spamming will give you an enemy rather than a friend, and it will also make your site banned by a large ISP, reducing your number of visits.

2. Don't spend too much money on submitting a service

Is it expensive to submit your site to 500 search engines? It's not worth it. These money-collecting guys simply type your URL into an automatic submitter. If you find a professional to submit your site, a maximum of hundreds of dollars will be available for careful and comprehensive service. Stick with the documentation on all the things that are done, including all the automated reply emails sent by the search engine.

3. Don't waste your time on Web trash

Submit your site to the main search engines and directories, and don't waste time on irrelevant search engines, which bring in almost zero traffic. You'd better spend your time carefully modifying your instructions for Yahoo registration.

4. Yahoo registration should not be hasty

Yahoo is the most important and most difficult directory to enter at the moment. The submissions will be reviewed by the real editors, so follow the instructions on the letter, and do try to convince them that your site is a useful resource.

5. To your site is officially enabled and resubmitted

Thoroughly test your site before submitting and make sure that each part is complete. Many viewers will not return to the URL after discovering a "build" tag.

6. Don't forget to write your URL on the business card.

Many companies spend a lot of money building a Web site, but they don't want to pay for a new business card that indicates the site's URL. The URL of your Web site should be in every company's stuff, from letterhead to teacup--there should be a URL in any place that should include a phone number.

7. No tricks.

There are a lot of tricks in the web promotion newsgroups and mailing lists that can be said to improve your search engine rankings. Don't be fooled. Search engines and directories are launching a campaign against those who "attack the system", and if they suspect you "fool" them, they will ban your site. You do use meta tags in the title and content text, but you must follow the submission rules.

8. Do not place any content in the Web site directory that you do not want the public to see

Most people have a "test" page on a Web server that they don't want to be seen by the public. However, direct search engines like AltaVista will automatically "expand" and index every page of your site unless you tell them not to. Create a text file called "robots.txt", place it in the root directory of your Web site, and tell all extended searches to access them to avoid these directories.

9. Do not forget to record the number of visits

Some wise men said: "Can not be measured, can not be managed." "Be sure to keep your server log files secure and analyze them using the tool software you choose." Your ISP may provide one or more free tools for you to use. If you can pay thousands of bucks, an efficient access analysis software such as Hit list or web trends can tell you how many clicks from each search engine, and the keywords people use to access your site, really help you increase your site traffic.

10. Is the work done? Don't Stop!

Site promotion is an ongoing process. Once you have completed the Search engine submission, check it one months later and you will find that some of the search engines are not registered at all. If necessary, it can be resubmitted. Keep looking for new sites that are willing to provide you with links, and new (but legally and preferably free) promotional opportunities.
