Ubuntu has a PDF file reader (evince). It is a very good software with a small size, Fast startup speed, and comprehensive functions. However, for some documents without built-in Chinese fonts, evince usually cannot display Chinese characters.
Of course there are many solutions, such as installing another reader, such as Adobe Reader for Linux and kpdf, which may solve this problem. But the problem is not the reader itself, but the system lacks some library and configuration.
The evince background uses xpdf for string processing. Therefore, you need to install corresponding Chinese support. By default, the system does not install the software package, which causes the above problems. You can try the following:
1. sudo apt-Get install xpdf-Chinese-Simplified
2. sudo apt-Get install xpdf-Chinese-traditional (optional)
If Chinese characters cannot be correctly displayed, the toolkit shown below may be missing:
1. sudo apt-Get install poppler-utils
2. sudo apt-Get install poppler-Data
I directly installed poppler-data, because evince is said to be based on poppler, some PDF files generated using latex need to install poppler-data,
Sudo apt-Get install poppler-Data
Then everything is normal.
