What is a steering gear?

The steering gear is the power source for controlling the motion of the remote control model. Unlike the General motor, the steering gear can provide very precise position control and high torque.

Simulation or digital?

Digital Steering gear has appeared 10 years ago. Now, almost all mainstream manufacturers are producing it. Compared with the simulated steering gear, it has two major advantages: Speed and holding power. The biggest difference between the two is the microprocessor of the Digital Steering gear. It is 6 times faster than the simulation of the steering gear in the control of the steering gear! When the "brain" of the Digital Steering Gear reports a wrong potentiometer to receive a signal telling it the current position of the output shaft, its response is so fast that there is no "no reaction zone ".

The "reactive zone" means that the output shaft must rotate a certain angle from the current position to cause the processor to issue instructions to correct its position. Because the signal refresh frequency of the Digital Steering gear is usually 300 times/second, and the simulation steering gear is only 50 to 60 times/Second, the Digital Steering gear can be more powerful to maintain the correct position, this is the so-called "persistence ". Another result is a buzz, even when the steering gear is idle. The cost of more force tolerance is that the Digital Steering Gear will consume more power. Therefore, a high-capacity NIMH battery pack is required for fuel trucks.

Plastic or metal gear?

When you buy a steering gear, gear is the first consideration. The steering gear is usually made of plastic or metal (copper or aluminum ). You will also guess that the cost of plastic is much lower than that of metal, but the strength is poor. Each Steering Gear of some manufacturers is divided into the plastic tooth version and the metal tooth version, while the plastic version usually has relatively small torque parameters. However, plastic gear has a winning advantage that it produces very little radio interference. The steering gear with severe electronic noise may be out of control. This is why many toggle drivers use plastic teeth on the throttles.

 

Multi-pole motor or non-core motor?

The steering gear is usually driven by two types of motors, multi-pole and non-core. The structure of a Multi-pole motor is similar to that of a traditional motor. The difference is that they have three to five rotor magnetic poles (equivalent to a small electromagnet ). The 5-pole motor is more accurate than the 3-pole motor. However, no matter how many Poles, they all have a feature that is not available to the motor, that is, when the two poles of the motor's rotor are within the same Permanent Magnet range, the torque is relatively small. Because the poles "share" the magnetic field. This is not a big problem for your 540 motor, but the steering gear should be kept in the same position for several seconds under stress.

The non-core motor does not use such a rotor. A lightweight wire "basket" is fitted with a permanent magnet as a rotor. This design will be much faster than the rotor of the core, especially when changing the movement direction. Moreover, this motor is much more efficient than polar motors, but produces more heat and is more sensitive to vibration.

What are the parameters? Torque vs. Speed

The steering gear usually sweeps the complete 60 degrees without load, and the required number of seconds indicates the speed; the kilogram (or oz) indicates the torque. In addition, most manufacturers provide steering gear at 4.8 Volts (4 batteries) and 6 Volts (5 batteries. Even if the six-volt parameter is not provided, it is safe to use the steering gear at this voltage unless the vendor has other statements.

Generally, you should purchase the fastest and maximum torque steering gear within your budget. Manufacturers usually sell the same wide steering gear into two models. The only difference is that one gear ratio is speed-oriented, and the other is torque-oriented. If you have to make a choice, choose more torque, because if the steering gear does not have enough power to turn the wheel, it is useless to speed up.

Airtroncis provides fewer Digital Steering Gear than other manufacturers, with only three. However, they are good in some aspects. The steering gear uses a standard-sized housing and a Coreless motor. The 0.06-second rotation speed of 94758z is the fastest steering gear on the market (equivalent to the s9254 of Futaba ). 94755z is a combination of plastic and metal gears, and the other two are all-metallic.

All Jr's Digital Steering Gear comes in standard sizes, metal teeth, and high-efficiency cardless motors. The 282 Oz.-In torque of ds9000t is also quite powerful.

Ko's product line is quite unique. The list is labeled with the "ICS" standard digital steering gear, while the model labeled "FET" uses the FET tube power enhancement technology.
