Sun unveils world's first virtualized data center model

The black box is the world's first virtualized data center model-it is optimized within the container to provide excellent energy, space, and performance benefits.

The black box is designed to meet the needs of users with limited space, power and cooling, and in the near future it will bring fast and cost-efficient data center deployments-where out-of-the-box means the IT infrastructure is placed into the box.

"Almost all of the CIOs (CIOs) and builders I met complained that they were constrained by data center energy and space-and it's clear that today's solutions don't meet the needs of Web 2.0. Jonathan Schwartz, CEO and President of Sun Microsystems, said, "black boxes designed for the protection of computers are not trying to improve the existing data centers, but rather start with the world's most widely used industry-standard containers and ask questions- How to build the most effective modular remote management data center on this basis. The answer is ... With a 1% initial cost, one-fifth cost per square foot, and 20% more, we can deliver a data center that has no more than a few times the capacity and functionality available anywhere in the world. ”

This is a novel data center concept that integrates compute, storage, and network infrastructure into a scalable modular unit with first-class cooling, monitoring and power distribution systems. Customers will be able to order a variety of standard and custom configured systems, storage, networking and software. The "black Box", located in a standard 20-foot container, is extremely flexible and can be transported easily by normal shipping methods. Simple water sources, AC power and network connections enable customers to quickly deploy black boxes when shipping.

The black box program was first launched by Danny Hillis, a member of Sun CTO Greg Papadopoulos and Sun Technical Advisory board and Applied Minds, Inc. co-founder.

"When everyone was competing to build tiny rack servers, we questioned: ' What is the largest computer we can build? ' We realize that to be transported easily, the answer is better not to be larger than the container. Papadopoulos explains, "then it becomes a black box with unique design features that optimize efficiency and performance." We are currently applying for five patents for general systems and installed rack-mounted structures, various aspects of efficient cooling systems, and environmental monitoring systems.
